6. I'll be at work on Thursday.
And my non-republican relatives will understand, even the retired folk, because we have always worked on holidays. We are pilots, merchant mariners, dispatchers, and firefighters. Not a Republican in the bunch.

WE are the 99%.

The Rethug teapertier in-laws** didn't invite us. Can't imagine why.

No big loss, though. We'll be spending Thanksgiving with the ones we love.

41. Recently my parents were going to come and visit
We asked that they not bring up politics or religion so that we could avoid conflict and all be assured of having an enjoyable visit. My father was all for it. My mother however refused and sent me an email first threatening to seek legal action to force us to send the kids to visit without my husband and I. Scared the crap out of me but we found out she can't actually do that. Then she said she wouldn't agree to not discuss politics as it would infringe on her rights and so she would never visit again. She ended the email exchange with "I'm sure you can figure out something to tell the kids." All over us asking her not to discuss subjects we know we don't agree on. She's lost her mind. :(

12. Sadly my favorite uncle is a Republican
He has forgotten that he once was in a union as was his dad, he forgets that his sister benefits form being in a union, that his 4 brothers all served in the armed forces (he made some comment about the vets that were attacked in Oakland as "losers") - the list goes on.

I used to look up to him and want to be as smart as him - I cannot reconcile how this smart man can be so utterly stupid. His wife is a Dem, so part of me thinks he justs spews the talking points to get into an argument with me.

Years ago when I was just a pup, my uncle and his best friend (a flaming fire breathing liberal) would sit around and argue politics. This was back in Reagan times when politics actually focused around ideas rather than hate. They would actually argue about legitimate differences. They were best friends and their arguments were never nasty or involved vicious name calling. His friend died in a car accident oh about 20 odd years ago, and I think he just never found someone to fill that intellectual sparring void and fox news just fucked up his brain.

18. My problem is my mother-in-law. She says she is not a conservative but
lately in her old age she spouts right wing talking points. She knows I am in the SEIU and she will attack unions knowing I can hear like in a car. I told her if you hurt my income you are hurting your daughter since we pool our money.

Last year at Thanksgiving she started in on the homeless people asking for money on street corners. She says they are refusing to work so we should not give them money.

This year since we always have Thanksgiving at my house, I will tell her to quit with the politics because we all don't agree.

19. Why don't you ask *them* what they are? They'll be more than happy to tell you..
To a big extent I don't blame those of the 99% who are Republicans, there is a massive propaganda effort from the right that quite literally goes on 24/7/365 and it is superbly done, Goebbels would gaze in awestruck wonder at the modern Republican propaganda machine sometimes colloquially known as the Mighty Wurlitzer.

Once you have an established world-view it takes a major blow to your psyche to move it much at all, let around turn it 180 degrees.

Why they are so brainwashed as to their own best interests just stuns me. Why the fight for millionaires and billionaires blows me away. Thankfully, I am staying home and having 11 liberal people, no relatives, at my dinner table.

28. You are correct, sir
and this is why we don't travel for the holiday. It would involve going back to Wisconsin, where deer-hunting is in full swing and the results of the hunt will be displayed hanging from trees outside the front windows whilst we attempt to eat the Thanksgiving meal.

It has always been my least favorite holiday despite my Puritan origins ...

31. My mom and I decided not this year
Edited on Mon Nov-21-11 11:48 AM by Tsiyu

We won't be going to Aunt Mimi's this year. My mother, who only has about 25% of heart function left, was forced to listen to Rush Limbaugh - and all my aunts rants about OWS - a few weeks ago when my aunt drove her to a few Dr. appointments. That was the last straw for me.

I love my aunt but she is a rightwing tool, and I have lost all respect for her. Not to mention that her oldest son - who borrowed thousands from my brother (he helped him out when cuz got arrested doing cocaine) - still acts like he's some Bigshot. My aunt and cousin have been the recipients of so much family charity (an uncle in California just bought her a beautiful house cuz he felt sorry for her), it's insane, and they live high on the hog and act like they are self-made successes while looking down on me - the "trailer trash." They wouldn't help me out of a paper sack.

Years ago, when i was a liberal talk host, my cuz started going off at a family party about his pro-life beliefs. I reminded him about his forcing his first wife to have an abortion and he suddenly couldn't speak. Shut his hypocritical ass up.

We'll be dining peacefully at my parents' with a totally liberal gathering. Woohoo!!!!!!

35. I have an aunt I won't associate with
Not under any circumstances. She a flaming wingnut. I was forced to listen to why gays shouldn't be in the military and how horrible gay people were all the while they knew I'm gay. They subjected my sister, who has two children she adopted from China, to why people shouldn't adopt children of another race and how it's bad for the children.

She claimed she had breast cancer and had the ladies from a breast cancer survivors meeting bringing her food and waiting on her hand and foot after she got out of the hospital from a mastectomy. Except she didn't have cancer and didn't have a mastectomy, she got a boob job.

36. Sorry to hear that

I have to say, my aunt is completely non-homophobic and non-racist. She was really upset last year when some old neighbors who used to use the "n" word came by to say hello on Thanksgiving.

We have all colors and orientations in our family and all are welcome in her home. But the flaming right wing stuff just gets worse and worse from her. It doesn't make sense at all. She is a decent person and I feel sorry for her, but I just don't want to hear it this year, especially with my mom facing heart surgery soon.

in my family its a geneder thing: my brithers and I are Democrats and my sisters are republicans. One sister is so anti-abortion that I think she would vote for any candidate who is anti abortion even if doing so would lead to the ene of Social Security and Medicare.
