I expect him to lean hard on ending the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy. Like you say, he has Congress about as whipped as he's going to get them. He'll beat them up several ways from Tuesday on their failure to act.

. . . the only worry is that the money won't be restored. I don't think we should put the burden of protecting SS on middle-class taxpayers who are benefiting from the payroll tax cuts right now when Congress could readily come up with the money to shore up the program by shifting priorities.

We shouldn't buy into the notion that all the rest of the money that comes out of our pockets and goes into the general budget is somehow unavailable for Social Security. For years, they robbed the program out front. It's time they paid it back by getting their priorities in order.

Also, the current and proposed FICA tax cuts don’t directly affect the long-term health of Social Security, because the revenue that normally flows direct to the Social Security Trust Fund is being reimbursed out of general revenue.
