Republicans treat voters like children.
They tell them faerie stories in order to cajole or frighten them into casting their vote.

Dems, for the most part, try to treat voters like adults. But that hasn't been working as an electoral strategy. We only got Obama elected because it looked like the economy was going to completely unravel under Bush, and McCain reacted like a doddering idiot.

But swing-voters gave the President only two years to solve a decade of problems before handing the House right back to the morons who screwed everything up in the first place.

The most charitable word I can use for those swing-voters is "irrational".

At the risk of sounding elitist, the Democratic Party has to come up with a coherent strategy for reaching such voters.

2. we endlessly pick on ourselves about how we communicate
but the wrong wing corporate media, in particular the hate radio talk shows, dominate the public airwaves and discourse. Until the public airwaves are not spewing hate, violence and intolerance, I am afraid that we have very little hope. Our messages simply do not get out, whatever they are.

7. You're so right.
I don't know how we overcome that. Getting the money out of politics would be great, but I don't see that happening.

Perhaps simpler, less nuanced messaging would help. I don't know.

6. But those swing voters are the most valuable voters..
Which is why Obama courts them so assiduously.

Who the hell are the lefties gonna vote for anyway, better to court people who vote for someone based on how much they'd like to have a beer with the candidate.
