Mice droppings! Flies! Hair! Brooklyn Pizzeria Closed After Health Violations

Famed pizzeria Di Fara has been shut down after racking up an impressive 67 points in health code violations -- a failing grade.

The Midwood, Brooklyn pie joint, which is often hailed as the best slice in New York and sees crowds line up outside the restaurant, was shuttered by the city Health Department on November 16th for being a "health hazard." The DOH witnessed signs of mice droppings, flies, hair, and workers wearing soiled garments at the restaurant (for a complete list, go here: http://ny.eater.com/archives/2011/11/di_fara_doh.php).

Pizzamaster Dom DeMarco has been making pies at Di Fara for five decades now, and his handmade $5 slices have made him a sort of beloved figure in the pizza community (if there is such a thing).

The Di Fara clan claim on their Facebook page that they would be closing for a few days for "personal matters." They later joke that spending so much time on Facebook had cost them the violation points.

1. A clever restauranteur would now sue for exposing the secret recipe.
Is there an intellectual property lawyer in the house? :D

2. I've worked in all kinds of restaurants - diner to 4 star - and they ALL had roaches
and problems with keeping out mice and other vermin. Just one of the fundamental hazards of work in food service.

5. It is true. 80% of all restaurants have them. No matter how clean your place is,
more arrive with your deliveries. Unless you have a constant cleaning/pest control program in place, sooner or later your customers and the health dept will see them too.

6. I remember one 4 star French place - sprayed for bugs one night, had just as many the following day.
I was like, "what the hell, are these super mutant ninja roaches, the ones that will survive the apocalypse?" Just they adapt and evolve resistance to pesticides so quickly, that it's impossible to get them all in one spray.

I won't even tell you about the bakeries and such, with all that sugar and flour all over the place. Talk about invasion.

10. Squeak squeak...
A few of my aunts used to love getting together and laughing over funny stories. One of the best (for me, as a child) was when one of them bought a blueberry pie from a local bakery and found a dead mouse inside.

After they had already eaten like half of it... :7

17. That's how I felt about it too...
for a long time, but I eventually got over it.

I mean, it could just as easily have been apple or pumpkin pie.

I found a piece of metal window screen in a can of Beef-a-roni one time.

That stuff is everywhere.

11. Must be a NY, NY/major metro thing..
I have never seen a roach or any sign of mice in my restaurant..in 5 years. We do have a monthly exterminator and rodent traps outside the building. I also am a real bitch about keeping a clean (spotless) restaurant (except my office).

16. I'd imagine it's hard to keep vermin out of a restaurant.

15. Sounds like they should be on Loss-of-Facebook.
But I am SO disappointed that it's not a Godfather's Pizza place. ;-)
