(IN) Lawmakers set to get iPads

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Some state lawmakers are about to get new taxpayer purchased iPads.

The iPads will go members of two committees, one in the Indiana House and one in the state Senate, as part of pilot program to save money on paper costs. It's estimated that the General Assembly uses 17 tons of paper a year, an average of 46 pounds per lawmaker. The cost is a half million dollars a year.

The Legislative Council approved the purchase of the iPads late this afternoon at the recommendation of Senator Brandt Hershman.

"iPads are cheaper than the laptops that legislators are currently provided with," says Hershman, "so we might have an opportunity to save some money there, too, and based upon our initial tests they have proven to be a very effective tool for legislators to use in lieu of carrying around a lot of paper."
