So... what ever happened to the "rules change" vote in the senate?
Remember all the hub-bub about how they were going to change things so a 51 vote would suffice?

I don't hear anyone talking about it anymore, but I DO hear the evil turtle-man McConnell bragging about how he will MAKE the senate vote on the health care issue:shrug:

I know the dems are afraid to change it because in 2012 & 14 we will probably be in the minority again, and would like to have the filibuster option, but it's like having a car in the garage and still taking the bus anyway.. we rarely ever used it when we were a minority... It needs to be curtailed though, because republicans use the hell out of it..for no good reason..

I would like to see a rule that allowed the minority THREE filibusters per congressional term..make them choose which are really important..

1. If I recall correctly...

they plan to address this issue on January 25th... how the Senate opened session and then went behind closed doors for approx. 3 weeks is still a mystery to me.

Edited to add: I've been curious for weeks about the Senate Rules that allowed for this.

2. I think the magic is that Reid never officially gaveled the first day of the session to a close.
So it's still "the first day" of the current session. Something like that.

3. I don't think
we will hear one single word from senate dem's regarding a change to the filibuster rules. I believe you are correct about 2012 and 2014. The pukes may not get a majority in the senate but I believe they will move closer then they are now. If they are successful then they will ask for filibuster rules change and use our argument for it. For that reason (and a few others) I seriously doubt we will hear one peep ouy of Sen. Reid on the subject. In summery, a rules change now hurts us more than it helps us.

4. There will be no real filibuster reform...
Democrats know perfectly well they may lose the Senate in 2012. Conrad's retirement makes that possibility even more likely. No way Democrats make any meaningful changes knowing they may likely be about to become the minority party in the Senate.
