Saving Ears, Not People: 7 Cases in Which Mass Shooters, Incl. Jared Loughner, Used Ear Protection
Jared Lee Loughner is just one of many mass shooters in recent history who worried more about damaging his hearing than slaughtering innocent people.

Video surveillance footage reportedly shows that Tucson shooter Jared Lee Loughner had inserted ear plugs before opening fire with his Glock and shooting 20 people.

The irony is appalling -- an apparent trade-off between a few seconds of pain in the ears for the shooter and the ultimate nightmare for his victims.

3. That is very weird...
...can I assume that means he wasn't suicidal? I wonder if any of the others were.

4. Actually, plugs or muffs make you a better shooter.
One can stay much more focused when one's ears aren't ringing.

When one is in rapid-fire mode in large caliber, all of that noise can affect one's vision and response.

8. Where do you learn something like this?
It's standard practice in the military I assume, but from shooting tin cans in the desert, I guess not ?

A friend, Zane Gutierrez, told the Times Loughner had experience with guns going back to high school. He said he used to meet Loughner to shoot at tin cans but stopped seeing him some months ago because his words and behavior had become so strange.

9. All of the above.
Not to brag, but I have never met a better shot than myself.

I can light a kitchen match with a pellet gun.

I can shoot out the points on a spade on the Ace of Spades at 20 paces, with a 9MM.

I can shoot birds or clay pigeons with a shotgun, held in either hand.

I was born with those skills and have honed them over the years.

The difference(s) between being a good, great, or superior marksman are very subtle.

7. I sincerely hope he hates every minute of prison
This guy ruined a lot of lives. It's my sincere hope that he misses freedom in an excruciating way every minute of the day.

Just sit there in his cell and rot.

Forever.

And when forever finally ends, he can take a 5 minute break to stretch, then sit right back down and start the forever clock again.

Asshole.

11. Distractions

I doubt it was for hearing protection aa much as not wanting to be distracted by the noise of the chaos he was causing.
