The new, extremely conservative owner of MSNBC, Comcast, has done a great disservice by ending Keith Olbermann's contract - not to Olbermann, but to the ability of the nation to hear another side of the story uniquely presented within the tenets of journalism. Countdown is full of commentary and subjectivity to be sure, but it also uses sources, attribution, and the historical record to back up and document its arguments logically, factually, and sincerely.

Countdown was the highest-rated show on MSNBC and wasn't even matched in the ratings by any show at any time on rival CNN, either. Comcast obviously wanted to quiet the most-popular voice that opposed their right-wing political philosophy.

One doesn't have to agree with the progressive side of the story to recognize its place in journalism, which is much in opposition (and NOT a mirror image) to another network that operates outside professional parameters by promoting faux-journalistic fiction, gossip, and abominable inaccuracies in order to persuade the gullible and weak-minded.

MSNBC's level of trustworthiness and respectability has taken a huge hit as will, I'm sure, the ratings and financial rewards of the network. It is their loss, the viewers' loss, and the loss of another piece of honest discourse in our society.

magazine of conservative Republicanism.

The issue I found was the one where they devoted many pages to a discussion of how important the Anti-Trust laws are, and how sad it is that those laws are not employed more often. (Done in a journalistic and non-editorializing way.)

They also had several articles deploring the "Friedman-Style Theory of Supply Side Economics."

It was pathetic to read such a conservative rag and realize that these days, every other article in it would be more radically progressive than what either Party currently represents!



Keith Olbermann was one voice that spoke out, with not so much a partisan bent, but an intelligent one. He was so refreshing to watch. And his show was one of the few reasons why we still pay a cable TV bill every month. (Though we don't have Comcast.)

Like posters above, I too feel gutted. But I now realize signing a petition for MSNBC to take him back is not the way to go. We need Keith Olbermann unchained. So that does not mean sitting in a chair for a cable news network. That means Keith must have control over his own destiny.

It took a day for everything he said in signing off to sink in, but I woke up this morning thinking about his departure and focusing on his words, (in effect), "these last two and one-half years have been too much for me." He made it clear he was not referencing doing the show, but all of the melodrama and inside bickering surrounding the production of the show. He doesn't need that to give us the facts and his special comments. He simply needs the monkeys off his back and his own microphone. When he finds that, I will be there to listen.

This cowardly move should erase any and all doubts. Comcast must have been put on notice by its advertisers: lose him, or lose us, and so they wilted like an overcooked spaghetti noodle.

I hope Rachel frequently "guest interviews" Keith Olbermann for his opinion on things. As this won't be "taking on other work," it will give him a forum without having a portfolio, much as Howard Dean has had since Rahm Emanuel maneuvered the exclusion of Howard from the Obama Administration (to its immense detriment, as it predictably turned out).

Howard's is now one of the most sought-after opinions on TV and radio. I predict Olbermann's will be the same until such time as he can legally be signed up by another outlet. His voice is just too in demand for it not to be heard. If he were to stand up on a soap box in New York's Central Park at noon, he would draw overflowing crowds. The food vendors would go wild with joy. Any advertisers with something to sell would jump at the chance to get in on a new Olbermann show, and money talks very loudly in today's America, as we know all too well.

If CNN ever gets tired of its wishy-washy ratings, it could counter-balance the bland right-of-center Wolf Blitzer and boldy hire Olbermann to inject some truth into their empty slogan, "the best political team on television." As their team is now the biggest and most boring political team on television, Olbermann would be a huge step up for them. Of course, it would mean that watching CNN would actually become interesting again, and they may not be ready for such a drastic transformation.

None of us should take this as an epitaph. Mr. Olbermann is a fighter and given his years in the business, I am sure he felt this coming in his bones.

His adopted signature line at the end of every broadcast, "Good Night and Good Luck" originated with the broadcasts of Edward R. Murrow.

I don't live far from where Murrow spent his teenage years, in fact I can almost throw a stone to it. Each time my drive to the local dairy or across the valley flats takes me through the tiny town of Bow, Washington, I think about Keith because of that one adopted line.

I cannot mourn the loss of Keith or Countdown. Nor can I wonder about the hours spent the end of each week reviewing his broadcast on my DVR to get a broad and frequently introspective view of world events in the last five days.

What I can say is that for a lot of us our night time ritual will change.

We will continue to watch Ed and Rachel, we may even grow fond of O'Donnell but like ancient astronomers, we will scan the media, both new and old for the signs of the next appearance of Mr. Olbermann in our evening skies.

When we see him coming in from the darker reaches of space, we will wonder aloud if he will settle into a stable orbit or pass through on a long ellipse.

Either way, we'll all be watching for him and his ability to look around the edges of those matters that affect all of us so very much.
