Stupid at the Olympics Leaps for the Gold
London 2012: Greece expel triple jumper over racist Twitter remark

The Greece Olympic team have expelled their triple jumper Voula Papachristou after she made a racist remark on Twitter, days before she was due to compete at London 2012.

Papachristou, 23, who was part of the 105-strong Greek team in London, had commented on the widely reported appearance of Nile-virus-carrying mosquitoes in Athens by tweeting: "With so many Africans in Greece, at least the mosquitoes of West Nile will eat homemade food." She subsequently deleted the message.

Papachristou said in a statement: "I would like to express my heartfelt apologies for the unfortunate and tasteless joke I published on my personal Twitter account. I am very sorry and ashamed for the negative responses I triggered, since I never wanted to offend anyone, or to encroach human rights.

1. Apart from anything else, I don't even understand what she was trying to say.
Racist or not, the remark makes absolutely no sense to me.

2. I think she was expressing the common
right wing refrain that there are too many African immigrants in Greece. There is a bit a fascist rhetoric in there. I could be wrong.

4. Ah, thanks. So, African people in Greece are the " homemade" food for the West Nile mosquitoes?

Cause all of Africa is along the Nile? Or all people from the huge continent of Africa are interchangeable?

Well, it makes a little more sense after your explanation, but it still doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

She doesn't really say there are too many, so it could have been just a very stupid and unfunny attempt at humor. But, I agree: She probably was being racist. At a minimum, she was playing into that type of audience.

Meanwhile. Greece sent her home, blowing years of training on her part. Yet, Romney hasn't fired the campaign advisor of his who made a racist remark in London.

And Matt Lauer interviewed the Romneys this morning without ever asking Mitten if he was going to fire his resident racist. In fact, the remark never came up at all.

Can you imagine if a Democratic campaign advisor had made a racist remark about a sitting Republican President while abroad? Lauer would have been like a dog with a bone.
