The Republican Presidential ticket: No Protestant for the first time in history.
I thought of that as soon as Ryan was described, after the pick, as a Catholic. However, Dan Rather reminded me of this on Maddow's show last night.

This is astounding, especially for the Party of evangelicals. Then again, the issues of patriarchialism, abortion and the GLBT community have forged a coalition among the conservatives of the Christian (Catholic, Protestant and non-denominational), Jewish and Muslims religions--the very ones in each of those religions who previously were most opposed to the others.

I remember being taught in my very fundamentalist Sunday School that Catholicism was a false religion, which had me very worried about my older sister's burning in hell for all eternity, in that she had converted to Catholicism before she married.

Anyhoo, when Catholic Al Smith ran, Hoover won counties by a record-breaking margin. And, we are all aware of the Kennedy election. Of course, Kennedy and Hoover were both white Christian males, so they had those things going for them, "electabilitywise."

AFAIK, Mormons do not believe that Jesus is more (or less) divine than they are and not God incarnate (anymore than they are). So, this is a major leap.

Also, neither has much governing experience. Yes, Romney was nominally Governor for four years, but that is his sole time in ANY elected office, less than Palin, who was at least Mayor of Wasila before becoming half Governor. And, in reality, Mitt was AWOL most of the time anyway. Plus, when you have a legislature that is over 90% Democratic and can override any of your vetoes it chooses, are you really more than a figurehead, really? I believe it is for those two reasons that Romney says very little about his "administration" or lack thereof.

Neither has any hand on foreign policy experience at all. Neither did the Obama ticket when he ran. However, contrast the rock star like success of Obama's foreign tour with the ridicule filled trip of Romney. And Biden was a recognized foreign policy expert.
And, of course, both Biden and Obama now have almost four years hands on experience.

Neither Romney nor Ryan has any military experience, war time (Romney) or peace time (Ryan).

These are things the Republicans were adamant about when Obama was running. Yet, they are sdamant now that both Romney and Ryan are more than ready to be President today, and not only President, but better than Obama Biden.
