So, Curt Schilling was on the Red Sox, gaining fame and hero status throughout New England and beyond, as he helped the Red Sox to their first World Series victory in almost a century (Damn Yankees!) as his blood reddened his sock. And the blood-soaked sock is now enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Even I, who is no sports fan, know this. (You cannot possibly live in Massachusetts and pick up a newspaper or watch TV or listen to radio and not know this, unless, apparently, your name is Martha Coakley.)
After that Series, Schilling tried to go to New Hampshire to campaign there with John McCain, but Red Sox ownership and/or management somehow got him to stay in Massachusetts. But, he did campaign hard for Scott Brown, as did every other Republican with any name recognition.
After he retired from baseball, this dedicated Republican wanted Massachusetts to lend him millions of dollars to start a business. Massachusetts declined, despite its gratitude for the heroic wearer of the bloody sock.
However, nearby Rhode Island did guaranty the loan of Schilling's company to the tune of $75 million bucks. No, RI did not actually lend the money. It took ONLY the down side risk, leaving the private sector with any potential upside and zero downside.
Why would any government make such a horrific deal?
Well, aside from our general new found love of privatization (of profits),k because Schilling was supposed to be a job creator, of course. Anything for the job creators.
Guess what?
