Egypt editor freed after president issues new law
Aug. 24 7:59 AM EDT

CAIRO (AP) — The editor of an independent Egyptian daily has been released from jail just hours after the country's Islamist president issued a new law that bans imprisoning journalists on charges related to their articles.

It was the first time President Mohammed Morsi had issued a law since he assumed legislative powers earlier this month.

Islam Afifi was photographed smiling and being greeted by staff from the privately-owned el-Dustour newspaper after his release late on Thursday. He was detained just hours earlier following a court decision that he be held in custody pending his trial in September.

Afifi has been charged with slandering the president and harming public interest with inflammatory articles published in his newspaper. The articles criticized Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's largest political group group.

The very first law he issued is freedom of the press and he applied it a journalist who had criticized him and the Muslim brotherhood.

My eyes are filling. I am a little afraid to hope, but I do hope this kind of thing continues, and that a legislature elected by the people does take over the law making process soon.

1. This is incredible!
I hope this is not some sort of staged illusion. I have grown cynical. And why not. I suspect the C.I.A. is up to their eyeballs in Egyptian politics.

2. That is just wonderful.
I hope he remains safe. He seems to be a good man but I'm sure it won't be easy. The old regime members are still around and we can only hope they are outnumbered by those who supported the revolution and its ideals.
