Rahm did not get his facts right when he spoke out against Chicago teachers again, a bad habit of his.
He spoke of how the Boston teachers had played nice and negotiated. They took out a full page ad in the Chicago Tribune to correct him on his facts.
Boston Teachers Fire Back at RahmBoston's union took the unusual step of taking out a full-page ad Friday in the Chicago Sun-Times, saying the union "voted unanimously" to support the CTU.
The union addressed its ad to Mayor Rahm Emanuel, taking him to task about the tone of the negotiations and suggesting he should treat the union with the same respect the city showed the union in Boston.
"We understand you referenced our recent contract settlement in Boston a few days ago," the letter reads. "While one cannot compare apples to oranges, we'd like to point out a few flaws in your characterization of our settlement."
.."The Boston union drew key distinctions between what Chicago schools are offering and what Boston teachers have. The Boston union says teachers have to find a new job if their schools close. In Chicago, the CPS's proposal is to give teachers in closed buildings a job if there is an opening.
Here is more about the ad from another source:
Boston Teachers Slam Emanuel In Full-Page Sun-Times AdThe ad begins by noting that teachers in Boston have voted unanimously to support the Chicago Teachers Union.
“Their fight against your corporate-driven policies has captured the attention of teachers around the country, and we are proud to join with millions of others in sending our full support and admiration to the CTU. The CTU is standing up for what we all believe in,” the ad says.
It goes on to say teachers in Boston whose schools have closed have a seniority-based right to obtain positions in other schools. The deal is the same when there are layoffs, the ad says.
“We support the right of Chicago Teachers to obtain similar protections. To deny hard-working professionals this right is to deny that experience and training matter in education our youngsters,” the ad says.
Just imagine that in Chicago, teachers from schools that are being closed down do NOT have seniority based rights to find a job in another school. That's pretty rotten.
Kudos to the Boston Teachers for not letting Rahm get away with his falsehoods and exaggerations.
