to teachers about being critical of the education reform policies. Says that when unions speak out against Democrats, it hurts the party.
She is becoming a real problem for the party leaders, I think. They are so clueless right now about what teachers, unions, and real education are about that they fail to even question her publicly.
The problem is that they don't even KNOW there's a problem with their education policy. That's sad.
Michelle Rhee: Democrats can reform education by standing up to teachers' unionsEmanuel went head to head with the union to get a better contract for the city's schoolchildren. In the process, he underscored a transformation in the Democratic Party. Increasingly, those who staunchly side with unions at any cost appear to be in the minority, while more Democrats are saying we have to look at education differently.
In Connecticut, Gov. Dannel Malloy, a Democrat, pushed through a law bringing more accountability into schools over early and strong union objections. In Los Angeles and Cleveland, Democratic mayors have implemented strong education reforms. As a group, the U.S. Conference of Mayors passed a resolution (led by a Democrat -- my husband, Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson) supporting parent "trigger laws" and rigorous teacher evaluations based largely on student achievement growth.
.."I know that opposing unions on some of these policies isn't easy. But the more that unions continue to attack fellow Democrats, casting everyone who challenges their policies as "anti-teacher" or "anti-union," the more they isolate themselves from the broader Democratic Party.
Geez, just what is needed right now. Another tantrum by Rhee about teachers unions. Another lecture from the person who has been given so much power over education. Another tirade from someone who taped children's mouth shut when she taught.
And not one damn word from any Democratic leaders in support of public education and public school teachers who are being shoved out of their careers by "reformers" like Michelle Rhee.
