How manyy times did Mitt call President Obama a liar last night?
Edited on Thu Oct-04-12 03:28 AM by No Elephants
Who was the real liar?

I don't think either one should call the other a liar, but I do think Obama should have rebutted Mitt's claims last night with Mitt's prior statements.

I'm sorry, but, if last night's debate had been a boxing match, I would have thought Obama had taken a dive and the referee (Leherer) was in on the fix.

Something like 60 million people heard Romney lie repeatedly without contradiction from the President.

As a result, you knew Romney was lying only if you had been following everything closely so far, which we know everyone does not do, especially the "brilliant" undecideds. Not only would you have had to be following everything before last night, you would have had to have a great memory and an excellent grasp of numbers and policy.

It was not only a matter of substance. Obama looked and sounded utterly exhausted and as though he resented being there. (Speaking of which, who was the genius who scheduled the first debate on the night of the Obama's wedding anniversary?)

Even the pro-Obama crowd at MSNBC flipped out. (I do not include people Chuck Todd or Mark Halperin as pro-Obama.) Matthews, in particular, had a meltdown.

I did not watch all the comments, but I think only Al Sharpton thought Obama won, and he based that on the fact that Romney lied. Sure, he lied, but how were low info viewers supposed to know that unless obama handled Romney's lies well?

Instant polling showed 56% of people said their opinion of Romney went up. Only 13% said the same of Obama. All are predicting that poll numbers in the conventional polls will tighten after this debate.

Obama's campaign team is usually so good. I would have thought they would have prepared him for the possibility that Romney would slip and slide, which is what he has done since he first entered politics against Ted Kennedy.

What the hell happened?

1. yeah, why did they let the debate get sched. on their annv? weird
as for your thoughts, I agree with basically everything you said. one good thing in this very bland/safe performance by the pres, is that even though he didn't correct the plethora of lies Mitt spewed (and there were plenty, and Obama seemed to forget the past, or froze, or was just too tired), the fact is, most voters have been paying attention the past month, and they've seen the video about the 47% on commercials or on the news/cable, and most of them know that Mitt is trying to trick people into believing he's for them. The problem is, even when people KNOW that a candidate is full of it, the appearance of seeming tough, presidential, and beating the other candidate will gain them a million votes in a pres. debate. So, sadly, yes, I think Mitt did well even if he lied Rev Al (thanks for the synopsis, I didn't see the after debate commentary), but, perhaps, this will only cause the president to really go hard on Mitt in the next debate - or - he'll just stay the same cordial presidential bipartisan guy he's been for 4 years... LOL... I dunno, but I do know this, as our other DU2 friend stated, I found myself disliking Mitt more after this - he's just so sleazy and willing to change himself entirely, day to day, to get votes.

Scary shit!

2. I think he will do better next time, DD, but the first debate will probably
have the biggest viewership.

I don't think he will lose the election, though.

I think ads will soon be out debunking Romney's debate lies, too.

3. It's coming out today how much Mitt lied...
I think the President would have looked bad had he called out Romney on every single lie. Obama could have spent his entire part of the 90 minutes doing just that.

Instead, he allowed Romney to lie repeatedly without rebuttal. I think we'll be seeing that rebuttal very soon in the form of TV spots.

In my opinion, there was no clear winner/loser.

Anyone who says they were swayed to vote one way or the other by last night's debate is either not being truthful, or had already made their decision anyway.

The American Public, for the most part, have short memories. 30 second sound bites will be more memorable that all the BS Mitt shoveled. By the time the 3rd debate rolls around, this one will have been forgotten.

Lehrer is a joke of a moderator.

4. Yes, Lehrer is a joke of a moderator. However, he probably won't lose his day job because of it.
As disrespectful as it is, they should probably give a ten second signal at some point, then turn off the mikes.

Otherwise, the biggest jerk, the one most willing to ignore the rules, gets the most time.

I also don't like it when the pushiest person gets served first at the bakery, regardless of who came in first.

But maybe that is just me.

5. The President often allows the right to
frame the argument and walk all over him.

Nothing has disappointed me more since the 2,000 election than Obama's weak responses to false right wing assertions. The President failed to understand that Fox News is never going to be fair to him. He failed to recognize that Fox News and the others are never going to tell the truth.

So what does the President do in response to right wing lies and thinly veiled racist remarks? He agrees to be interviewed on Fox News thereby lending Fox credence that they do not deserve. Either the President or his close advisers are inept. It is one or the other. Why doesn't the President recognize that weak sauce doesn't play?

This has led me to contemplate the possibility that the President really isn't "one of us", meaning one of us liberals. I always think, surely the President is not this fucking stupid.
