2. I applaud these people-- Medea Benjamin, Cindy Sheehan, David Swanson and the rest
Theirs is a discussion we refuse to have in the rest of the nation. All weekend long on TV it's been, "We thank these veterans for protecting our freedom."

Unfortunately recent military action has never been about the threat to freedom. That was a "bill of goods" sold to us to justify a gift to the military industrial complex. From Vietnam forward none of these "actions" has been necessary to protect our freedom(s). This national illusion is propped up at the expense of the rest of us.

We need a department of peace.

3. The Department of Defense used to be called the War Department.
And Veteran's Day was Armistice Day, in honor of the end of the war to end all wars.

I don't think peace is the direction the changes have been going in.

It's odd. In some things, this nation has marched leftward, even if it was costly. Abolition of slavery, universal suffrage, child labor laws, minimum wage laws, etc.

And in some things, it has marched rightward, like war.

And, in some things, we regressed, like dismantling much of the Great Society and the New Deal.
