Study: Fox News Viewers Know Less Than People Who Don't Watch Any News

"Fox News viewers are less informed than people who don't watch any news, according to a new poll from Fairleigh Dickinson University.

The poll surveyed New Jersey residents about the uprisings in Egypt and the Middle East, and where they get their news sources. The study, which controlled for demographic factors like education and partisanship, found that "people who watch Fox News are 18-points less likely to know that Egyptians overthrew their government" and "6-points less likely to know that Syrians have not yet overthrown their government" compared to those who watch no news.

Overall, 53% of all respondents knew that Egyptians successfully overthrew Hosni Mubarak and 48% knew that Syrians have yet to overthrow their government.

Dan Cassino, a political science professor at Fairleigh Dickinson, explained in a statement, "Because of the controls for partisanship, we know these results are not just driven by Republicans or other groups being more likely to watch Fox News. Rather, the results show us that there is something about watching Fox News that leads people to do worse on these questions than those who don’t watch any news at all."

This isn't the first study that has found that Fox News viewers more misinformed in comparison to others. Last year, a study from the University of Maryland found that Fox News viewers were more likely to believe false information about politics."

3. Excellent point.

The viewers of Fox "News" are intentionally being misinformed. It is challenge enough to be well informed without being intentionally misled. The nation has been harmed in a tangible way through this right wing propaganda.

Just how bad is it? These Fox dummies are SURE that Obama is going to try to take their guns away. You know, just like Bill and Hillary did. Munitions manufacturers made ginormous profits through a misinformation campaign. I understand there was a second huge surge in ammunition and gun sales after Obama was reelected because he was sure to try to take their guns away in a second term. It's a great gig!

Now they have created a wild conspiracy theory that Obama is going to change the law so he can be elected to a third term. They do not suspect for one moment that they could be the victims of a ruse. Teh stupid, it hurts.:rofl:

2. I could have told them that without a study.

I encountered a woman the other day that was afraid her 70 year old mother would not be treated for a medical condition because of "Obamacare". She firmly believed in the death panels. I told her that Fox "News" had created the death panel myth out of thin air. I believe she thought I was lying to her.

4. There are death panels. They're called "health insurance companies," Big PHRMA and big health care.

The health insurance companies that refuse to cover life-saving treatments and, in general, provide such lousy insurance. (Most people who go bankrupt because of medical expenses had health insurance.) Big PHRMA, which ensures that Americans pay more than anyone else in the world for their products--often after having financed the research, too. And prevents drug re-importation. And big health care, which overcharges like nobody's business.

All of whom gave us the most expensive health care system in the world and worse than third world health outcomes.

Also known as the folks who really wrote the Affordable Health Care Act.

5. Yeah, I have no love for the insurance industry.

That's why I wrote this:

I would like to remind the readers of Care2 that U.S. health insurance companies do not contribute anything to health care. They are only a PARASITIC middle man taking a cut of "FREE MONEY".

Western European health care systems are far cheaper than the U.S. model. And they are more effective. The French health care system is the most expensive yet it comes in at less than 2/3s of the cost of that of the U.S.

The reason for this is profit. In the U.S. everyone along the line takes a profit cut. The health care service providers have to make a profit just as the insurance companies and the pharmaceutical companies.

This costs all of us. For one thing care is rationed to save profits for the insurance industry. And care is denied by the insurance industry.

This is why we desperately needed a strong public option in the new health care legislation. We needed a public option that could evolve into a system that did not include a parasitic insurance industry or a for-profit health care services providers.

Before this can happen we have to remove money from the legislative process. Well, you know what we are up against.

Now the paid right wing misinformationists will jump on here and tell you how bad Canadians and Europeans have it. Just remember, they are paid to lie.
