Markey to run for Kerry's Senate seat

MALDEN, Mass., Dec. 28 (UPI) -- Rep. Edward Markey, D-Mass., frustrated with being in the House minority party, says he will seek John Kerry's Senate seat if Kerry becomes secretary of state.
"I have decided to run for the U.S. Senate because this fight is too important," Markey said in a statement to supporters. "There is so much at stake."
Markey, 66, the dean of the Massachusetts delegation, is the first prominent candidate to declare a run for Kerry's seat, which would be filled through a special election early next summer, probably in June.

Kerry is widely expected to be confirmed by the Senate to replace Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in President Barack Obama's second term.

Democratic Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick is expected to appoint a temporary senator to fill Kerry's seat if Kerry is confirmed.
Patrick has said he favors appointing a "caretaker" who will not run in the special election. Markey will not ask for the appointment, the person familiar with Markey's decision told the Globe.

Do these DLC types EVER put anything above their personal goals?
Well, to be fair, I appreciate that Patrick has been very pro-gay. Would he be that way if his own daughter had not come out, though? Dunno. He didn't say or do much about gay rights before she came out.
Markey is certainly well known in his district, but Brown is known nationally and still relatively popular in Massachusetts. And Markey is the archetypal old school Massachusetts Irish pol and looking a little battered and worn. Brown is not. We'll see.
Meanwhile, I would be over the moon if Mike Capuano got to be Senator. However, I cannot see it happening unless he gets a lot of media training ASAP. He reminds me of that sweet, genuine guy who would make the absolute best husband and father, but the ladies just keep falling for the smoother. slicker operators who are all style and break their hearts.
Nothing wrong with being smooth and slick. Someone can be good, but also smooth and slick. Capuano, though, is just genuine, hardworking, sincere, honest and effective.
Oh, and principled, which means he probably won't get the nom, no matter what.
