Equal rights for gays mentioned in Inaugural Address and the Benediction.
Edited on Mon Jan-21-13 12:44 PM by No Elephants
The inaugural poet, Richard Blanco, a Spaniard by birth, with, I think, Cuban exile parents, and the first openly gay person to serve as Inaugural Poet. Part of the benediction given in Spanish.

Now, that is morning in America.

They more than made up for picking a homophobe for the benediction originally.

Props to the President, Reverend Leon, Mr. Blanco and Senator Schumer.

Muy bien, todos, muy bien.

2. haha.. good! I think overall it was an abfab inaugural.
And as for ms Clarkson, I just ignored her thoughts and appreciated her singing. She was the lone questionable person up there but her singing was very good.

And congrats to that poet! What a moment for him! his work eventually came around to me as a complete performance, and I was duly impressed! Pres Obama picked very well after some initial worry.

3. I think it was the first inaugural address to reflect some of the diversity of America in a way.

that is more direct than just a reference to "equal rights."

After all, Thomas Jefferson spoke of equality and owned something like 800 slaves, including his own children.

So, specifics are good.

ETA. Yes, Clarkson did very well. But, as always, I am sure a Democrat could have been found who would have done just as well.

BTW, the vocalists had it better than in 2008, when the cold murdered voices.
