Egypt floods Gaza tunnels to cut Palestinian lifeline
Egypt floods Gaza tunnels to cut Palestinian lifeline
By Nidal al-Mughrabi

GAZA | Wed Feb 13, 2013 7:39am EST

(Reuters) - Egyptian forces have flooded smuggling tunnels under the border with the Palestinian-ruled Gaza Strip in a campaign to shut them down, Egyptian and Palestinian officials said.

The network of tunnels is a vital lifeline for Gaza, bringing in an estimated 30 percent of all goods that reach the enclave and circumventing a blockade imposed by Israel for more than seven years.

<snip>

Dozens of tunnels had been destroyed since last August following the killing of 16 Egyptian soldiers in a militant attack near the Gaza fence.

Cairo said some of the gunmen had crossed into Egypt via the tunnels - a charge denied by Palestinians - and ordered an immediate crackdown.

The move surprised and angered Gaza's rulers, the Islamist group Hamas, which had hoped for much better ties with Cairo following the election last year of Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi, an Islamist who is ideologically close to Hamas.

Why would Palestinians intentionally provoke the Egyptians and risk their own "lifeline?"

The story, at least as Reuters tells it, smells fishier than Sarah Palin's waders.

1. "smells fishier than Sarah Palin's waders."
:spank:

Yes, it sounds like something done at the behest of Israel and the U.S.

I thought they got rid of Mubarak.

2. They did not get rid of the Egyptian military.
We train their military leaders.

Mubarak was a figurehead.

Morsi started out so well.

However, power and money corrupt quickly.

Also, for a poor nation like Egypt, the aid we give every year is essential.

5. I had the second photo in mind when I referred to her waders smelling fishy.

I remembered seeing it during the 2008 campaign.

So, you see, my reference was really a tribute to her skills as a hunter and fisher.

Remember Fred Thompson's describing her during the Republican National Convention as "the only candidate who can field dress a moose," or some such?

LOL! As if that would make her a good President!

Granted, it was no empty chair routine, but I did laugh at his disingenuousness.
