So, it's Presidents' Day weekend.

And, as I googled for images of U.S. Presidents, I learned something very interesting. Many of the photos at http://www.whitehouse.gov/about/presidents/ have been doctored to make the Presidents seem younger, thinner and/or better looking.

Several versions of the same portrait may come up when you google. In almost every case, the version on the government website is more flattering than the others.

Just another way our government uses our tax dollars to fool us. Suckas!

And that's without reading the bios on the site. Hell, if I can't trust the photo, how can I trust the bio?

His election and, even more significantly, his re-election, provided the perfect excuse for the conservadems to complete their takeover of the Democratic Party. I don't know whom I curse more for that, him or the Clintons.

After studying the unretouched (I assume) photos of our Presidents, Abe seems much more handsome than many of the others, not to mention more pleasant-seeming.

Then again, if you had to figure out how to end slavery, yet hold the country together, and were married to Mary Todd, you might get dour from time to time, too.

His old law firm partner wrote to a lot of people to get their memories of Lincoln. He bought together a book of anecdotes that show that Lincoln was very witty and often very funny, as well as very kind.

In elementary school, I read his bio and fell in love with him, as much as a pre-teen can fall in love, anyway. (Come to think of it, pre-teen love may be stronger than falling in love as an adult, when we are more skeptical and self protective.0

Yes, I had a crush on him. My teacher had told me that she wanted me to read something besides novels. I read a few bios. Honest Abe and Babe Ruth made a big impression on me, although I did not crush on the Babe.

It's funny that those two impressed me so much because, after I moved to Massachusetts, I became friends with a distant relative of Paul Revere's and Lincoln's. (Two of Revere's 8 daughters married Lincoln men.) And, I learned about the curse of the Babe on the Red Sox, which I don't remember reading in the bio. In 2004, breaking the curse was a regional obsession.
