The brilliant Condi Rice words to that effect time and again when asked why the Bush administration had done nothing, despite knowing that an attack by Al Qaeeda was imminent.
I don't know where to begin to answer that question.
To begin with, there is a vast amount of territory between doing nothing at all, followed by taking a vacation, and figuring out the exact method of attack and preventing that. I could go on, but covering everything that could have been done in response to the intell that an attack was about to occur is not the point of this post.
Of course, kamikaze pilots were the very first thing that came to my mind the first time that I heard Condi ask that question. .
{Kamikaze} were suicide attacks by military aviators from the Empire of Japan against Allied naval vessels in the closing stages of the Pacific campaign of World War II, designed to destroy warships more effectively than was possible with conventional attacks. Numbers quoted vary, but at least 47 Allied vessels, from PT boats to escort carriers, were sunk by kamikaze attacks, and about 300 damaged. During World War II, nearly 4,000 kamikaze pilots were sacrificed. About 14% of kamikaze attacks managed to hit a ship.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KamikazeI was not alive during WWII, but I've seen kamikaze pilots in American World War II movies on TV. But, wouldn't you assume that someone who was in the U.S. Navy during WWII Now, would have at least heard of kamikaze missions?
Someone must have challenged Condi about kamikaze because later, she began to qualify her wording with references to hijacking or commercial planes or peace time. Not that it's a huge leap from kamikaze to commercial planes.
The thing that so impressed my young mind when I saw those movies was that these guys had to, and were willing to, kill themselves to accomplish their mission. In face, their mission was killing themselves. Not a noble decision you make in the heat of the moment to spare someone else. They trained for it! Yet, so many did it willingly, maybe eagerly.
Never once did I think to myself "Pfft. It's a military plane. I cannot imagine anyone doing this in a commercial plane. It would never happen if they had to hijack a plane."
Anyhoooooo, today, I found this:
{Attempts to assassinate} Richard Nixon
April 13, 1972: Arthur Bremer carried a firearm to an event intending to shoot Nixon, but was put off by strong security. A few weeks later, he instead shot and seriously injured Governor of Alabama George Wallace.
February 22, 1974: Samuel Byck planned to kill Nixon by crashing a commercial airliner into the White House.<21> He hijacked the plane on the ground by force, and was told that it could not take off with the wheel blocks still in place. After he shot the pilot and copilot, an officer shot Byck through the plane's door window. He survived long enough to kill himself by shooting. These events were portrayed in the film The Assassination of Richard Nixon.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_presidential_assassination_attempts_and_plotsBut, why would a brilliant National Security Adviser know of an attempted attack on the very White House that had allegedly taken place a bit over 26 years before she took office?
And, if she did not bother to study up on things like that before 911, surely someone, perhaps even Mr. Google, had brought it to her attention after 911?
BTW, of course, her boss's dad had fought in WWII--
the Navy, specifically. Also, in 1974, at about the same time the Nixon White House was supposedly the subject of the Byck plan, Bush the Elder was Chairman of the RNC and urging Nixon to resign for the good of the
Party country. Surely, the Chair of the RNC would have known about the plot on life of the Republican President?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_H._W._BushAfter 911, if not before, did George the Elder never mention to George the Lesser the bits about the kamikaze pilots or the alleged plot to hijack a commercial plane and crash it into the Nixon White House? Did George the Lesser hear such things from his Dad, if no one else, and never mention them in the presence of his National Security Adviser?
This is not meant to be a 911 conspiracy theory post (not that there's anything wrong with that). It's simply intended as an example of how these people stand there on national television with their bare faces hanging out and calmly lie to us, repeatedly, if need be, about things of great, great importance to us, even matters of life and death.
