Resignation
Scarborough announced his intent to resign to spend more time with his children five months into his fourth term in Congress. "The realization has come home to me that they're at a critical stage of their lives and I would rather be judged at the end of my life as a father than as a congressman," Scarborough said.<24> A special election was held to replace him.
Controversy
On July 20, 2001, one of Scarborough's aides died after hitting her head on a desk when she fainted while alone in Scarborough's Fort Walton Beach, Florida, office.<25> According to Scarborough, soon after the death, allegations "spread all over the Internet" that he had been involved,.<25><26> There was no evidence of foul play. In 2003, he joked about the incident with Don Imus on Imus's radio program.<27> In 2004, it was the subject of a public spat between Scarborough and filmmaker Michael Moore.

Joe Scarborough
From AllHatNoCattle.com: "'The Okaloosa/Walton medical examiner will be out of the job he's held the last six years. Dr. Michael Berkland has been dismissed by the Medical Examiner's Office in Pensacola. The Florida Medical Examiner's Commission had complained of his failure to complete dozens of autopsy reports in 2001 and 2002, a violation of state statutes' ... Did the Coroner who will replace dismissed coroner break campaign donation laws? Dr. Gary Cumberland and spouse possibly gave more than the legal $1000 limit to Joe Scarborough... Dr. Cumberland is replacing the recently dismissed medical examiner, Dr. Michael Berkland who preformed the autopsy on Lori Klausutis, the dead aide found in Joe Scarborough's office."
On Imus' Show, Joe Scarborough Laughed about Dead Staffer

Joe Scarborough
From the Daily Dystopian blog: "Conservative MSNBC news host Joe Scarborough was a guest on MSNBC's Imus show last Thursday, May 29. In complementing Scarborough on his sense of humor, Imus said, 'Don't be afraid to be funny, because you are funny. I asked you why you aren't in Congress. You said that you had sex with the intern and then you had to kill her.' To which Scarborough laughed, 'Yeah, ha, ha ha, well, what are you gonna do?'" As the Political Amazon (politicalamazon.com) wrote us, Lori "Klausutis is the Scarborough intern who was found dead in Scarborough's Fort Walton Beach office on July 21, 2001. At the same time that cable news shows on Fox and MSNBC were hounding Democratic Rep. Gary Condit over the disappearance of Chandra Levy... Scarborough appears to have been granted a free pass... Regardless of whether Scarborough actually murdered Lori Klaustis, his casual joking about her death is inexcusable." Send complaints to viewerservices@msnbc.com
http://archive.democrats.com/preview.cfm?term=Joe%20ScarboroughIn 2000, he had run
unopposed. He resigned September 5, 2001, a month and a half after the intern's death, to spend more time with his kids? (BTW, with no witnesses, how does one determine in an autopsy that the deceased fainted just before dying?)
His wiki says that she died Friday, but was not discovered until Saturday morning. After a bit of googling, I could not find a time of death, which is something you can determine by autopsy. Then again, as indicated above, the medical examiner who performed the autopsy was not the best.
Why did it take until Saturday morning to find her. She was married to a doctor. Did her husband miss her and call the police Friday night?
http://www.americanpolitics.com/20010808Klausutis.htmlScarborough didn't notice what age his kids were until a year after he was re-elected? And he couldn't wait for another year to step down? There had to be a special election to replace him?
Apparently, though, he had announced his intent to leave Congress in June, before his intern's death.
http://www.fedweek.com/item-view.php?tbl=6&ID=7And, he was a newlywed in 2001, having divorced his first wife in 1999, amid rumors of infidelity. I don't know when in 2001 he married his second wife, though. Was he already cheating on her? Re: his second wife: His divorce papers specify that he was a devoted father and faithful husband. A bit odd for divorce papers.
Scarborough has
threatened promised to run for public office again "down the road."
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/11/13/joe-scarborough-political-office-running_n_4266363.htmlhttp://extremeliberal.wordpress.com/2010/07/09/scarboroughs-dead-intern-gets-markos-of-daily-kos-banned-from-msnbc/So, first it was about spending more time with his kids, then in 2009, he said that he would not run again because he was having more influence as a broadcaster than he could have as an officeholder, and now it's about his kids not wanting to move again? The last bit sure does open the way for him to say one day that he can finally run again because his kids are grown. But you can bet that it won't be for the House next time.
It's all very confusing.
While researching this, I found it interesting that Scarborough came out of nowhere during the Clinton administration to win a seat in a district that had historically been Democratic. And was replaced by someone who had switched from Democrat to Republican in 1997, to run for the state legislature. I thought the whole point of triangulating was to do the opposite? To enable Democrats to win in historically Republican districts by becoming DINOs? Oops.
I said it before and I'll say it again. When government is not doing anything for the 99%, people are likey to vote for the party that promises never to raise taxes. That's my theory, anyway.
