"He stood there and allowed the gun to be pointed right at him," New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez told a prayer vigil late Tuesday, "so there would be no more young kids hurt."

Martinez, who met with Masterson, said the teacher began to talk to the suspect, urging the boy to put the weapon down even while it was pointed directly at him.

2. So much for the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.

My sister's friend stopped an armed home invader by talking to him, too. IIRC, she even offered him a meal. However, I am not so naive as to believe that works all the time.

Still, nothing takes away from Masterson's courage.

3. I am for reasonable gun control measures.

I believe in background checks, closing the gun show loopholes, stopping the sale of assault weapons and limiting the size of ammunition magazines.

I was a hunter many years. And I was especially accomplished at deer hunting. We lived on venison that I shot. I have a 12 gauge shotgun here in the home. It is loaded with a one ounce piece of lead known as a deer slug. These slugs are very effective at terminating the life of a large mammal. I'm just saying.
