What part of "prescribed by a doctor" is escaping you?

As he reminds us, Obama smoked marijuana (without a prescription).

Cigarettes are highly addictive, more than heroin, some say. (Anyone who thinks Obama is chewing spearmint gum at funeral services for the Marathon bombing victims and Mandela needs a clue. It's nicotine gum.) Cigarettes are also killers of smokers and those around them. Even when they don't kill smokers, they make them sick. Not only are cigarettes available to adults without a prescription, but they were protected by the FTC for decades and tobacco growers were subsidized by taxpayers.

Alcohol has broken up homes, ruined lives, and landed some drinkers in the street. It has also filled graves by destroying livers. It's available to adults without a presecription.

Whatever one thinks of marijuana for recreational use, why did feds close shops in California that were making marijuana available only by prescription?

What part of this mush from Obama applies to marijuana prescribed to ease the suffering of cancer patients?

I would guess a number of those who vote Republican or Libertarian and a number of Indies would be ecstatic to see doctors able to prescribe marijuana to their suffering family members. Put them together with Democrats who would love to see the same; and I am guessing they would make a very healthy majority of the population.

Maybe we should direct our efforts and dollars to issue-based organizations, instead of being divided along more artificial lines.

1. I do not believe cigarettes are as addictive as heroin

or any opiate.

At any rate the cigarette addict would be unlikely to rob a convenience store or steal from their friends and relatives to support their habit. But then cigarettes are legal. Maybe we would feel entirely different if opiates were legal without a prescription. Obviously users wouldn't then have to resort to crime to acquire their supply.

I pay no attention to what Obama says. Sorry. I do not trust a word he says. It's a very ugly feeling. Both of us, my wife even more, feel that way. We are lifelong Democrats and we both cried at the 2008 inauguration. We shouldn't be the ones apologizing, either.

So, whatever he feels about marijuana doesn't come from an independent thinking part of his brain, IMHO. TPTB will play the marijuana legal status to their greatest advantage employing it as a smoke screen (no pun intended) as necessary.

2. I cried for joy election night, 2008. That morning, I had been on line

to vote by 6 am, even though the polls did not open until 7.

By Inauguration Day, though, I was kind of scratching my head about Obama, but still hoping for the best, once he actually got into office. Up until election night, every time a red flag had gone up, I told myself, "He has to say/do that to get elected. Once elected, all will be better." But after his election, when he made appointments like Emanuel, Geithner and Gates, I was getting more and more concerned. Ditto choosing homophobe Warren to give the invocation at the inauguration.

I did not give up until he put his final touches on ACA by pen, as a video showed us, and then passed those amendments by reconcilation, March 2010. By then, he had also appointed the cat food commission. I was over my election night joy, to say the least.

As far as cigarettes being as addictive as heroin, that was a side point, something I've read in the past. But, certainly, cigarettes are addictive--and designed to be addictive.

I am not advocating making heroin, or even marijuana, as readily available as cigarettes. At this point, I would settle for letting the states decide whether marijuana should be available by prescription, without interference from the feds.

3. Recently I read

that someone had developed a variety of marijuana that had less of the alkaloid that gets one "high" but more of the therapeutic alkaloids. That sounds promising. My problem with marijuana is the "high" part. I did find it to relieve pain effectively.

4. Well, as long as the masses don't enjoy it, they may make it available.

Let's hope so. Too many people suffering for no good reason.

Pain killers usually put me right to sleep for hours. That's why I never take any.
