I mean no disrespect to right thinking (meaning leftists!) people in Florida, Arizona and Texas, but those three states seem to stand out in my mind.
And, yes, Goldwater was who he was. The fact that he seems not so bad in hindsight does not take away from how bad he was in the context of his own era.

And now finds McCain too left to be a "real" Republican. So, we can't blame Arizona solely on Goldwater. Rather, I kind of blame Arizona for Goldwater. And, to be nonpartisan about it, for Janet Napolitano, the head of Homeland Security who counseled 18 Mayors, mostly Democratic, how to react to Occupy Wall Street.
