Federal government will recognize same gender marriage.
States are still free to set their own policies. However, the federal government will recognize marriage for federal purposes, like income taxes (which was the subject of the Supreme Court case, with Kennedy and the Democratic appointees deciding in favor of the the couple), visits in federal prisons, Social Security Survivors; benefits, etc.

I give big props to the Obama administration for this. And also to Justice Kennedy. For an older Catholic Republican, that was one giant step he took for American mankind (and womankind).

Kennedy, Obama and Holder. Well done!
