Too bad there's no way to earn a living there and it's expensive as hell.

unemployment is 5.7% in Vermont. Not perfect, but not as bad as most places. And it's more expensive to live here than some areas, and less expensive than others.

I may not live there anymore but it's home. I'm perfectly happy for people to think it's too cold/too expensive/too poor/too much unemployment/not the right kind of employment or whatever. The last thing Vermont needs is more people. :P

Think about it. It's like a Canada that we can actually move to.

I'm not all that tied down to where I live. I'm sort of country shopping to tell you the truth. I don't think you can beat the opportunity that exists in the US though and being able to have some of the social benefits of more civilized countries, without emigrating, then that huge for me. I'm tired of being in a really conservative place where the elected officials would, frankly, prefer if I was dead.

What if 50,000 people said, "I had enough of my redneck sunbelt state, I'm moving to vermont for the healthcare or gay marriage and low unemployment."

How is VT going to cope with all the refugees?

in a tiny, cold, mostly agrarian state.

If universal healthcare passed in VT, and 50,000 people like myself finally said, "you know what, I'm tired of my conservative state. We're not progressing here" and picked up and moved to VT. Or maybe the 99ers said I'm tired of waiting for a job to come back that probably never will.
Are there enough positions at the teddy bear factory or ben and jerry's plant or the ski resorts to employ us all?
I don't have a college degree. I make a living selling things to churches, something we have a hell of a lot of down here.

In the south we have major industries that Vermont doesn't appear to have.

Will the government of VT be providing jobs for those that are seeking them?

Could it be that the reason the unemployment rate is so relatively low there, is because people that couldn't find a job left a long time ago?

What's going to happen to tourism in VT if a bunch of developers move in and start bulldozing your forests and leveling your hills to build subdivisions to house all the refugees?

and oldest evironmental and development laws in the country, Act 250. Hey, we don't even allow billboards in this state, do you really think we'll let people just come in and wreak havoc on beloved hills and valleys? Not a chance.

We've had big problems due to lack of regulation for land development.
Billboards don't bother me so much but what's going to happen when 50,000 (or more) people want to move to Vermont?
I know you don't think that's going to happen but they didn't plan for a million people to move to my city after the 1996 olympics.
Gotta plan. Policy has consequences. Some good. Some not so good.
