Virginia Thomas calls Common Cause, asks it to apologize for watchdogging

"I don't need to account for every last $680,000," Virginia Thomas reportedly told Common Cause. "I don't ask you where your money comes from."

When asked about her financial ties to the secretive and aggressively Conservative Koch brothers, Thomas was dismissive.

"They pay for lots of perfectly legal activities, too," she stated. "It's not as though they personally funded an entire grassroots political opposition party, or anything like that."

Analysts say that Thomas' decision to contact Common Cause is unusual but not without precedent. In 2006 Vice President Dick Cheney personally telephoned Brian Sharma, the publisher of Truth or Else, an independent newspaper that had printed an unflattering piece about his alleged war-profiteering.

Sharma could not be found for comment despite repeated attempts.
