janehamsher: At Quantico w @DavidMHouse to deliver 42,000 sigs 4 Bradley Maning to brig. Holding us at gate, never happened before: http://t.co/zZS4ZxP

janehamsher: Called Lt Brian Villiard of Quantico on Friday and again today as courtesy to say we were coming re: Bradley Manning, never called me back.

janehamsher: Demanding my social security number before they'll let me on Quantico base, but won't say why. Never happened before.

janehamsher: Guess Lt Villiard better at reading FDL than returning phone calls. For first time, made us sign letter saying we won't deliver any pkgs.

janehamsher: We're literally being detained without any explanation at Quantico 40 min now. Won't let us leave. #Wikileaks

janehamsher: Gunny Foster towing my car bc they won't accept my electronic proof of insurance, demanding paper.

janehamsher: Escorting us off base, hooking my car up to tow truck now.

janehamsher: Still holding us, my car on tow truck but Quantico guards still won't let us leave.

janehamsher: Some officers have now entered the guard house & are talking 2 military police. @DavidMHouse & I detained w no explanation for 1 hr 20 min.

5. Update:

since the tweets in the OP:

janehamsher
Quantico Guard: "are u leaving anything in your car" Me: "I can't check when they're driving it on to tow truck."

janehamsher
It's 28 degrees, forcing us 2 stand outside.

janehamsher
Military police searching & impounding my car. Won't let @DavidMHouse on 2 see Bradley Manning, won't say why.

janehamsher
Now guards going 2 inventory vehicle.

janehamsher
Quantico guards didn't give registration back 2 me, but demanding it again.

janehamsher
Forcing @DavidMHouse 2 go 2 court. Wouldn't give ticket, gave him a summons 2 appear in court.

janehamsher
Me "you won't accept electronic proof of insurance." SGT: "has to be printed." Me: "it was printed off that." "Unless u have a printer."

janehamsher
Escorting us off base, hooking my car up to tow truck now.

janehamsher
Gunny Foster towing my car bc they won't accept my electronic proof of insurance, demanding paper.

janehamsher
We gave SS# @JavaJoeX . They still won't let us leave OR allow @DavidMHouse 2 go 2 brig even though he is on visitor list 4 Bradley Manning

janehamsher
Question not whether we can get on base @FirstTeamTommy, that is their discretion. They won't let us OFF & won't say why.

janehamsher
We're at the guard gate @SundevilSal, but question is whether they can arrest us 4 refusing to provide SS# rather than let us leave.

janehamsher
We've been coming 2 Quantico 4 months @chrisvcb, @DavidMHouse has official permission 2 visit Bradley Manning,

janehamsher
Now Military Police asking @DavidMHouse 4 his SS# AGAIN.

janehamsher
When Gunny Foster asked 4 my SS# I said "what if I refuse?" He said he's Military Police & he can arrest me. Is that true?

janehamsher
We're literally being detained without any explanation at Quantico 40 min now. Won't let us leave. #Wikileaks

12. That's an outrage, really. What kind of country is this?
Imagine if this was Venezuela how many anti-Chavez posts there would calling him a dictator etc.

They have every right to visit Manning. He is innocent, has not had a trial, and I hope Hamsher sues them for harassment.

People should be up in arms in about this.

If they are treating her this way, they are proving that the allegations about their treatment of Manning can be defintely be believed.

10. House and Hamsher have been detained for an hour and a half.
They are not allowed to see Manning (House is on the approved visitor list), nor are they allowed to leave.

Meanwhile, Amnesty International has written a letter to Defense Secretary Robert Gates objecting to the conditions of Bradley Manning's detention and the U.N. has opened an investigation.

http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2011/01/23/detainees/index.html

Update and background from Greenwald:

As they have done several times before, Jane Hamsher today drove David House to visit Bradley Manning at the Quantico brig -- this time, as they announced ahead of time, House intended to deliver to brig officials a petition relating to Manning's detention conditions which has been signed by 42,000 people (only House is on the approved visitors list, so Hamsher typically drops him off, waits at a base McDonald's nearby (as she's been instructed to do), and then picks House up once his visit is done). Today, they went to the brig and House attempted to enter, the same way as always, but, as of 1:45 2:15 pm EST, both of them have been detained for 45 minutes 1 hour and 20 minutes, and told that they are not permitted to leave or else they will be arrested. They have now been told -- without explanation -- that they are not permitted to enter, and Hamsher's car is being towed off the brig's property and impounded.

While in the Navy, I only stayed in Marine brigs.

But I know nothing of the Army and that was a long time ago.

for specific reasons.

He is near the Grand Jury in Alexandria.

Glenn Greenwald: The point of the Quantico episode was to deny Manning his only real visitor: more likely solitary will crack him & induce anti-WL testimony"

18. Seems to me that someone should be going to the President on
this obvious violation of the Constitution. They are being held without cause. I think we have just found a military cut we should be making. This bunch has gone beyond the call of duty. These are American citizens they are holding. As to no letting them see Manning? Is he in too bad a condition because of something they did? God where is KO when we need him?

28. Statement of Events:
http://fdlaction.firedoglake.com/2011/01/23/statement-of-events-bradley-mannings-primary-visitor-detained-at-quantico/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+CampaignSilo+%28Jane+Hamsher+Campaign+Silo%29

At roughly 1:00 pm, upon driving onto the base at Quantico, David House and blogger Jane Hamsher were detained by military guards. House, who is on the Quantico Brig’s visitation list, has been visiting Bradley Manning in confinement since last September.

In December 2010, House came forward with testimony that he witnessed a deterioration in Manning’s physical and mental state due to the conditions of solitary confinement. House traveled to the Quantico brig to check up on Bradley’s well-being after a week in which Manning’s lawyer filed an Article 138 complaint over Manning’s mistreatment at Quantico. House and Hamsher also planned to deliver a 42,000 signature strong petition calling for an end to the inhumane conditions that Manning is being held. Upon arriving at the main entrance at Quantico, House and Hamsher were stopped and detained by military police who provided no explanation of detainment aside from a statement from one MP that his orders to detain had “come from the top.”

From 1:00 – 1:30 MPs took their IDs and made them sign a form that they could not deviate to the brig or else they would be trespassing. At this time, one of the MPs asked for Hamsher’s auto insurance card. Hamsher attempted to produce a digital copy of the card, at which point MP Gunnery Sgt. Foster informed Hamsher that her car would be towed. House and Hamsher offered to drive away off the base but were denied, despite being detained only ten feet inside the base’s perimeter. The MPs took the Social Security numbers, phone numbers and addresses of House and Hamsher.

Around 1:40 the tow truck arrived and MPs instructed House and Hamsher to leave their vehicle, informing them that their vehicle would be searched. At 2:00 pm House observed military officers arriving and entering the MP outpost which oversaw his detainment. House expressed concern that he would miss Manning’s visiting hours but was informed that he could neither exit nor move forward to the base. No explanation for House and Hamsher’s detainment was provided until at 2:50 when they were informed they could leave the base. They were detained for two hours up until Manning’s visitation time period was set to expire at 3:00.

34. Jane's last report at the time
of this post, 13 hours ago.

-snip-
I am very happy that I went, and could be there to support David, because one of the first things the MPs said to us when we arrived — long before they asked for driver’s license, social security numbers, registration, phone numbers, quizzed us about the addresses on our licenses, etc, etc, was that they had orders to do all of this. Which means they were planning to detain us long before we got there. They were going to use any excuse to keep David from visiting Manning, and try to intimidate him from coming back.

It was really heartening to David to hear of everyone’s support when we were being threatened with arrest, searched and detained for two hours. What happened was not a surprise. It’s sad that this is what we have all come to expect when advocating for the civil rights of someone who has been identified as an “enemy of the state,” without benefit of a trial. But here we are.

It’s important to remember, however, that the true targets of today’s actions were Bradley Manning and David House. What is happening to both of them should be of concern of everyone, so I hope people
