Boehner 5 -- Pelosi 0
That's the number of magazine covers both speakers appeared on just before and immediately after their party won the midterm election.

On Wednesday, Nancy Pelosi handed over the speaker’s gavel to John Boehner, who is charged with leading the “Tea Party Congress” in their efforts to repeal health care reform, disband the Select Committee on Global Warming, defund Planned Parenthood and do a bunch of other things that people who have never held elected office think are good ideas.

So it’s no wonder Boehner has gotten so much media attention: Within a few weeks of the midterm elections, Boehner graced the covers of Time, Newsweek, The New Yorker and The Economist. Not to mention his mug on the October 30th issue of the National Journal’s cover. Five major magazine covers in less than a month might seem like a lot for an incoming Speaker who hadn’t even been sworn in yet, but hey, being the Speaker of the House, in the words of Joe Biden, is a “big fucking deal!”

4. I still absolutely can not believe that the first woman Speaker didn't get one damn cover.

It was in 2006, not 2008, so there is no issue re Obama or presidential candidates or winners overshadowing her huge barrier shattering win. I just don't get it. It is disgraceful.

I guess the POTUS candidates were announcing by January 2007 but it still seems utterly ridiculous.

Big fricken deal - another white guy is Speaker. That has been the case for EVERY Speaker Except for Nancy.

5. Not only the first woman speaker but the third most-powerful person in the country.
And Pelosi had attained the highest position of any woman in US history.

7. I have to be honest, complaining about the number of magazine covers Pelosi got (or didn't get)
when she became speaker 4 years after the fact sounds really petty, IMHO.

9. With the plummeting circulation many of these magazines have
I'm not sure most of the people could even pick Newsweek or Time out of a lineup.

12. We have not bought either in decades
One year I got a subscription to US News & World report.. I was in 5th grade I think..

We were overseas & had no access to newspapers & yet our teacher kept assigning us "current events". I think all we got was Stars & Stripes & the Panamanian papers..in Spanish, of course:)

14. It was a comparison to how the media treats Boehner now
Pelosi was ignored in 2006 while Boehner was glorified in 2010.

15. Can the media treatment really be quanitifed by counting the number of magazine covers one gets?
Edited on Mon Jan-24-11 12:38 PM by hughee99
Especially since so few people read them anymore.
