Sacramento to vote on crash tax for all out-of-towners, not just those at fault

Attention, out-of-towners: Getting into a crash in the city of Sacramento is about to get more expensive.

With a City Council vote scheduled for tonight, the city is on the verge of joining a growing list of California cities and fire districts that charge nonresidents hundreds of dollars when they're in a wreck that requires Sacramento Fire Department response.

... State Sen. Tony Strickland, R-Moorpark, has drafted legislation that would ban crash taxes in California, saying the fees represent another hit to already over-burdened taxpayers. Several states – including Florida, Pennsylvania, Georgia and Missouri – have banned the fees.

... Fees would be levied on all out-of-towners involved in crashes, not just on those who are at fault.

... While some insurance policies cover Fire Department costs, the typical auto policy in California does not, said Sam Sorich, president of the Association of California Insurance Companies. What's more, "if policies do start covering these instances, rates in an area where these fees are in effect are going to be adjusted (upward)," he said.
