I've been surprised by every day he continues to appear on Faux, ever since he excoriated Bush for his non-handling of Hurricane Katrina.

8. No problem and no disagreement from me about your comment.
45 years ago we used to have passenger service to our small nw ohio town. You could be in Chicago in about the same amount of time as if you could drive.

It would be nice to have high speed service from DC/Pittsburgh/Cleveland/Columbus to Chicago.

10. My Dad retired from Amtrak ...
... and because of the year after year gutting I was certain that rail would disappear in my lifetime. Today, I know it will rise again, if we wake up in time. If not, China is very pro rail so the rails will eventually get here.

2. And he's employed by a network that is "out there where the trains don't run."
Or, more like a runaway train that we hope will eventually crash itself.

Get off that train, Shep!

6. That's almost a Palinism...he mixed up two old sayings.

"Out where the trains don't stop" is a very old saying. It means that you're in a place so unimportant that it doesn't even get a train stop. It's a reference to the fact that every town originally had a train stop when the rails were built. When speed became more important, the railroads ended service to the less used and less important towns. Those who lived in those towns found themselves isolated from civilization. Being "Out where the trains don't stop" meant that you were in a place that didn't really matter and that nobody paid any attention to.

"Out where the buses don't run" is a more modern variation of the same idea. When buses replaced trains as a primary means of mass transit, most bus lines didn't run into "unimportant" towns. The saying was updated to fit.
