One of the buzzier SOTU seat-mate combos from Tuesday night was either the "Polish caucus" or the "-ski caucus" depending on whom you asked: Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) and Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska).

But Murkowski had to cut short her visit to the House chamber when she got word, just before the president's speech, that the younger of her two sons -- Matt Martell, 17, a senior at Gonzaga -- was headed into the hospital for an emergency appendectomy.

Doctors told the family his appendix would have burst within hours; but Matt came through surgery just fine, the senator's office said Wednesday.
