32. ? What digs?
He practically sounded like a Republican, he embraced their agenda for christ sake he is even talking about trimming the size and scope of government, he gave them everything they could possibly want, did you not hear him say that they could take the money saved on the tax system overhaul and CUT THE CORPORATE TAX RATE wow how is that even close to a Democratic agenda?......

but I am not going to get pissed off, all in all I think he did what he had to do, but this speech was extremely centrist more centrist then any speech I ever heard from him before.

41. So because of one comment about business he's a Republican?
What about health care? Green jobs? Infrastructure investments? New technology? 100K new teachers? What about all those goddamn things? What about the section on health care where he basically told the GOP to stop fucking around because the bill isn't going anywhere?

Oh, right, I forgot. Those "don't count".

115. ...consistently highlighting the real accomplishments of government
versus the republican's consistent vilification of government. The repugs have been so effective over the years at convincing people that government can't do anything right, its almost impossible to directly contradict without raising hackles, but I think Obama did a wonderful job of indirect counter-argument.

He said the words "clean coal" ... and he proposed a "5-year freeze" on domestic spending. A freeze is a simple/stupid solution that is no solution at all, potentially blocking intelligent decisions that could reduce the debt.

Those are my main quibbles; overall a very good speech with a vision for the future grounded in the realities of the present.

Overall, i think we do need to be optimistic. Look forward and stop grinding our heels because we can't get every single thing we want. At least he is hinting about getting out of the wars.

Maybe I am just being optimistic because I have 2 super wonderful grandsons and 3 great kids just starting out on their own in this world. They are all well aware of how bushco f-ed things up (yes, even the one year old has heard it from Ma!).

Babysteps maybe, but at least we should be moving forward.

So sad we have a free-market neoliberal in the White House, busily destroying the legacy of FDR. The part about Race to the Top was especially painful. The results of this doubling down on Bush's No Child Left Behind fiasco will have tragic consequences for the nation's children who attend public schools.

No President can be 100% for everyone and if he is then he is either a fool or a liar and our President is neither of those. He came in wanting to change the tone of washington and dammit he is trying his best to do just that. I love the man and respect the President.

91. I'll bet he won't be so glib next year.
He can ask for the Republicans to "work with them", but they don't intend to.

They ran for the last 2 years to overturn everything Obama and Pelosi and Reid did in the last 2 years.
So, there won't be any campground sing-alongs held this year.

Large amount of hype and make-believe in this speech. Tiny amount of substance.

Half of it should have been about how to get back to 5% unemployment in a year.

But what can you expect from a Wall-Street White House like this?

My "sigh to yay" ratio was way down, so that's good.

But like all SOTU speeches, they are high on the rhetoric and usually low on the reality.

So while I still support Obama, I will still take a wait and see attitude before I give him high marks.

Because, while we the people would enjoy some of the changes he outlined in his speech, the reality is a congress that rarely listens to us.

So we will now see if leather actually meets pavement.

112. Gotta say no
I didn't think it was "bad". Mostly it wasn't much at all. About the only line that really stuck out for me was that he wanted 80% of the electricity to come from "clean sources" by 2035. Strangely, he goes on to mention "clean coal" and "natural gas", which aren't particularly "clean sources".

Much of the rest of it was pretty much meaningless platitudes, and often at odds with his own actions over the last 2 years. If we've learned on thing about this president, it is that he will compromise on ANYTHING. As such, anything he advocates can be "bought" by agreeing to something else he wants. Strangely, he "threatened" to veto anything with ear marks. We'll see. He is the pragmatic president and I just don't see him vetoing something over an arguement about whether some small ear mark is even an ear mark or not. I kinda put this in the same category as broadcasting HCR on CSPAN.

Basically, with Obama, it is best not to read too much into what he says, and just wait for what he accomplishes. It leads to alot less disappointment.

127. Reminded me of his campaign speeches....
We can all agree that the President is a great speaker, probably top of his debate team.

They remind me of a country wester song lyrics, "a little less talk and a lot more action."

We heard a lot of progressive campaign promises leading up to Obama's election, but where is the follow through on most of his promises?

You cannot fix the budget deficits unless you address the military spending and the 2 wars that are purposely "off budget."

Without addressing the budget deficits, you will not fix the economy.

You cannot create jobs here in America when the jobs are all being moved off shore to other countries (while those corporations receive tax breaks for doing so). Creating jobs in government or Wall Street does not fix the problem.

Why did the president ignore the 800 pound foreclosure gorilla in the room? States such as mine here in Florida are having our economies and housing markets destroyed by the scams pulled by banks gone wild, who made questionable loans to people who could not afford the mortgages, who bundled those loans up via MERS into investment packages they misrepresented and sold, who are now foreclosing on those homes using questional and sometimes faked documents. Where is the call for investigations, Mr. President? Why aren't banks being held accountable? The law firms participating in these foreclosures by "creating" documents for the banks' foreclosures when they are missing or never existed?

WHERE IS THE CALL FOR TIGHTER REGULATION OF THESE BANKS SO THIS DOESN'T HAPPEN AGAIN?

A long list of states are struggling with their debt loads, cutting programs for the poor & elderly and laying off cops & firemen. What about that, Mr. President? Want to comment on the debt burden the taxpayers are facing at a state and local level? No?

Sorry, I can't join the yeah-yeah party here today.

136. I really liked the part
where he said that a free trade agreement with Korea would create American jobs. It was almost as good as the lines about how Race to the Top (trough) bribes would improve education. The real jewels were his assurances that the Iraq war is over, that Afghanistan is soon to follow, that business is over regulated but that oil companies get too many tax breaks (the oil companies line was given with a straight face) and that too many people work for the federal government and that one of these day we'll need to tax rich folks like him just like everybody else. I was impressed by the sheer cynicism of this speech even though I've heard identical versions of it many times before.

138. I believe it could be either a good speech or a great speech depending
on how policy plays out over the next couple of years.

I especially liked the first part re: the development of clean sustainable energy; although I'm not a fan of nuclear energy and I don't believe in clean coal unless they can find a way to capture the carbon.

I also liked the focus on education, science and math, although I believe history has great value as well if we're to be a wise people.

Thanks for the thread, Still a Democrat.

I prefer a pragmatic who gets part of the job done against all opposition, and has to compromise somewhat, to a fundamentalist who doesn't see the realities, and becomes marginalized, hence achieving nothing. I have worked for with the latter kind one too many times.

touting the positive influence of government (anathema to the GOP), while talking fiscal responsibility like the great liberal, but fiscally conservative Senator Paul Simon.

Also, showing vision with the technical innovation theme. That is the one aspect of business where America still leads the world, and it is important to stimulate it as much as possible.
