Police in Cairo Beating up Jounalists

: Police started beating up journalists protesting outside the Press Syndicate in downtown Cairo. They beat up women journalists too who were screaming and crying for help. “Do not club women. Do not club women,” some of the men rushed to the police asking them not to target women. “You’ll make things worse if you use violence” many journalists were telling police officers outside the building.

9. Why do they always resort to even more violence?

This is becoming a global movement of ordinary people.

The lies that usually worked are not working anymore, such as the scary 'extremist Muslims are going to take over the world'. I read yesterday that this was already tried, but for ordinary people that no longer has any impact. Bush and his dictator allies wore it out long ago.

People want jobs and food and an honest government that isn't robbing them of their rights. It's simple.

I hope no more people have to die before Mubarak realizes that even if they succeed in silencing the people, it will only be temporary.

The U.S. State Dept. made a statement yesterday calling on the government to use the opportunity to implement reforms.

But when you have turned a blind eye to your friends' brutality for so long when it suited you, to expect them to change now when you see the results, is a bit naive.

The Army is now on the streets. I hope they behave like the Tunisian Army did. How loyal are they to Mubarak?

10. The US response to Egypt's protests

'Not much' probably sums it up best.

"President Obama ignored unfolding events in Egypt in his State of the Union speech last night (while praising the popular uprising in Tunisia that has created the chance of democratic reform there). Response from the rest of the US government has been muted.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said yesterday: "The Egyptian government has an important opportunity to be responsive to the aspirations of the Egyptian people, and pursue political, economic and social reforms that can improve their lives and help Egypt prosper..."

...So far, Egypt has responded to its "important opportunity" with tear gas, rubber bullets, beatings, and the arrest of hundreds of democracy activists and protesters. The regime has reiterated that unlicensed demonstrations are illegal and will be dealt with harshly. There has not yet been strong condemnation of Egypt's actions from US officials.

Nor have there been US calls for the regime of President Hosni Mubarak – who in November held Egypt's most fraud-ridden parliamentary election in decades – to accede to protesters demands: Step down, allow democracy, and immediately revoke the Emergency Law that has been used for years to detain and torture regime opponents and was recently renewed..."
