5. Proposals like this seem great superficially,

but they really just solidify the condition that to be an elected official, one must be independently wealthy. Take a look at the salaries of your state representatives and think about whether you would be able to maintain a residence in your district, and the capital, and travel between the two on that salary alone. One has to make his living from independent wealth, or corruption. I'm not saying that higher pay makes politicians honest, but at least it doesn't proscribe it, as does the alternative.
