Man helps push cop car out of snow; cop arrests man

(Reuters) - Police were grateful when Michael Slaughter helped push their squad car from a snow bank. Too bad they had to turn around and arrest him.

Slaughter was in jail on Thursday in lieu of bond on a bad check charge. A deputy sheriff and state trooper had been looking for Slaughter, 30, to serve an arrest warrant on the charge in Wheeling, Mo. last Friday when they got stuck in the snow, and Slaughter happened along.

After the car was freed from the snow, the deputy "kindly thanked the man for his gracious assistance" but realized Slaughter was the man he was looking for, said Livingston County Sheriff Steve Cox in a statement Wednesday.

The deputy apologized for the way they met, but took Slaughter into custody, Cox said.

6. On the plus side, judges love this kind of thing.

Slaughter should have an easier time of it going forward than he would've otherwise.

Doing the right thing pays off in the long run, in this case being helpful.
