Ed Schultz 'Psycho Talk' Segment Axed By MSNBC

First Posted: 01/28/11 09:45 AM Updated: 01/28/11 09:45 AM

MSNBC has shelved Ed Schultz' "Psycho Talk" segment, Schultz announced on his radio show Thursday.

The segment, a sort of cousin to Keith Olbermann's "Worst Persons In The World," features Schultz highlighting a statement or action he dubs "psycho talk" every night on his show. But a listener emailed in to Schult'z show and said that the segment seemed to have disappeared since Schultz' switch to 10 P.M. from his previous 6 P.M. slot. (Schultz' move was part of MSNBC's reshuffle in the wake of Olbermann's departure from the network.)

Schultz said that he missed the segment, but that "I work for somebody. I don't call all the shots."

He said that "the decision has been made that Psycho Talk' was better at six o'clock and not at 10 o'clock. Now look, there's probably people in positions that are a helluva lot smarter than I am and have decided that that's what the way it's going to be. So, that's what's happening."

34. NBC Head has a Mentally Disabled child. It is responsible to rename or remove the segment
I'm an Ed fan since 2003, but a lot of people have mental illness in their families & people were just shot in AZ. Maybe (& time will tell) Ed won't be stymied, just refined.

24. If I were in Ed's shoes, I probably would've dropped it myself.
It just doesn't seem to be in good taste after the Arizona shooting (that wasn't political).

9. On his radio show yesterday, Ed was bellowing "NOBODY IS
SQUELCHING ME IN ANY WAY!" Then he goes on to admit later that "Psycho Talk" is getting dropped! :tinfoilhat:

14. Was right about what?
What did I miss?

Actually, I don't think that few minute segment with the name "psycho" in it is that big of a deal. The hypocrisy and stupidity can still be pointed out - as Chris Matthews has been hitting them hard all week.

31. If they believed that, why can't anyone affliated with MSNBC freely give their opinion
about what is happening at the network?

If nothing changed, why aren't they free to speak?

4. This contradicts what Ed said on his radio show yesterday. A caller
called in and very politely said he felt that there was a deliberate attempt to silence progressive voices. Ed went off on a rant against this poor fellow saying "There is no attempt to silence progressives. I am one of the most liberal talkers out there! I used to have a segment called Psyco Talk and some people expressed that it was an offensive term so I dropped it. I will still have the same segment but it will not be called Psyco Talk!!!!!!!!!!!!!there is more liberal alk out there than before (NOT)" (paraphrased btw)
Well Ed tore this nice man a new one to the point this fellow was stuttering and speechless. Ed got all defensive and hoisted his self up on his bitard to say how progressive he was and that there were no changes. He also said Keith didn't quit. He told the caller he didn't know what he was talking about and hung up on him.
Watching Ed the last three days, he starts to practically "whisper" when he is making his main point that should cause concern or anger in the public. But no..... he has been reduced to polite whisper level.
Ed is worried about how to pay for his nice hunting and fishing lodge now. I give him four months tops.

5. He will not last long.. Cenk will depart too
Edited on Fri Jan-28-11 11:05 AM by SoCalDem
Rachel will stay because she has a more understated "tone", and she's smart as a whip. Tweety will hang around until his contract is up, and who knows..he may still enter "Pensive-ania" politics.,.

MSNBC is already test-running some of their Ken-doll "B"-teamers during the day..

One (or more) of them will be ready to fill any gaps..and they will happily report on whay MsnbComcast wants them to.

8. I thought the segment was stupid...
... not the action of spotlighting stupid behavior, etc. But "psycho talk" is/was such a cliched, unfunny, and generally ridiculous title/premise. It should have been pulled shortly after it was launched.

Find another premise that lets you do the same thing but doesn't make you sound like you let a 14-year boy produce your TV show.

16. I Don't Know If It's Just A Reaction To The Tucson Shootings & MSNBC Wants To Show......
that their people are toning down the rhetoric or if the powers that be at Comcast are 'squelching' the progressive voice in a methodically. I'm concerned that if it is just an attempt to show that they are willing to 'tone down the rhetoric' and are doing this for patriotic reasons - that it is only the progressive or liberal voices that will tone down and the right wing crazies will continue as always or in fact ramp it up.

Either way - the progressive/liberal element falls further and further behind and loses their energy while the right wing/conservative crazies continue to have more and more influence over the sheeple.

26. He could replace it with a segment called "Nut Cases Speak".

What are they going to do, fire him.

Not if Maddow, Mathews, etc., back him up .... which they will do unless they are "spineless liberals".

27. An MSNBC promo for its prime-time shows, which I saw about 15 minutes ago, didn't even list Ed.
They mentioned Chris, Lawrence and Rachel. I don't recall Lawrence ever being left out of similar promos when he had the 10 PM show.

33. It goes without saying what direction MSNBC will take.
They just want to snow us on the way there.

It is the way corporations deal with impending layoffs. First, they tell all the workers no one will lose their jobs. In this way, all the talent they want to keep won't leave. Second, they announce in small groups who is on the chopping block and they give them time (one month or two) to look for new jobs. It gives them a chance to sort through who else will stay and who will be fired.

Third step is the people who report to work and security leads them to their desk to collect their things. Last step is the people who can't even get in the building, but has someone sort through their area and decide what to send home.

Who is really surprised?
