Bad spuds caused the mysterious deaths of 200 steers at a Portage County feed lot two weeks ago.

That's the finding released Friday by University of Wisconsin-Madison researchers who have heard plenty of apocalypse theories after the mass deaths of blackbirds, starlings, carp, crabs and other animals since the beginning of the year.

The cows in Wisconsin were killed by a toxin found in moldy sweet potatoes, according to the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at UW. Feed samples revealed the presence of the mycotoxin ipomeanol.

Peter Vanderloo, associate director of the lab, said the mycotoxin likely "was a major factor in the disease and deaths of these steers."

Never ever ever thought about moldy sweet potatoes ending up in a Wisconsin feed lot.

Bad sugar beets, rotten pumpkins, fermented barley from beer making, moldy corn, yes. But Sweet potatoes, on my list that would have been after bad cabbage.
