This is an admittedly weak analogy, and I do not mean to minimalise the upheavals in Egypt. But as I was listening to people talk about the possibility of religious fundamentalist hijacking the democratic protests in Egypt I thought about the 2008 election and the Tea Party. Let's face it there was a lot of anger in the country. Mainly at the Bush Administration and the GOP for where they had led us. The Dems and progressives had a big victory (or so we thought). The Tea Party are a bunch of folks that basically support everything the GOP did to put us in the mess we were in. But what they did was steal the emotional spotlight. While Obama turned away from most progressive ideas. The Tea Party made themselves (with the great aid of the MSM) the face of the angry, fed up Americans. It was ignored that they supported the very policies that caused the damage. Their "story" was better for the media. So now we are in a situation where the Conservative viewpoint has prevailed. The deficit exploding tax cuts have to be extended. The drive to cut government spending, even though there is no economic model where that creates jobs or improves the current economy, is paramount. After the business and financial sector in their unregulated zeal, almost collapsed the whole economy, all we can talk about is removing more regulations. Our anger from 2008 has been hijacked by the fundamentalist.
