Edited on Sat Jan-29-11 02:58 PM by Dangerman
That wanted the Middle East to have "freedom and democracy"

Yet when that has happening, America becomes seriously concerned about it.

Double standard if I saw one.

after all, how much "freedom and democracy" do we have in this country? Only those with the economic means have any measure of freedom.

14. Joint Cameron-Sarkozy-Merkel statement
PA has details of Cameron's conversation with Hosni Mubarak, in which he expressed his "grave concern" about violence against protesters.

The prime minister urged the embattled leader to "take bold steps to accelerate political reform and build democratic legitimacy" rather than attempt to repress dissent, according to Downing Street.

In a joint statement with Nicolas Sarkozy and Angela Merkel, Cameron added: "The Egyptian people have legitimate grievances and a longing for a just and better future.

"We urge President Mubarak to embark on a process of transformation which should be reflected in a broad-based government and in free and fair elections."

59. Egypt supporters rally worldwide

Demonstrations are taking place around the world in a show of unity with protesters fighting for political change in Egypt.

In Turkey between 200 and 400 protesters held a demonstration outside the Fatih Mosque in central Istanbul after Friday prayers to lend their voices to the Egyptian cause.

Anita McNaught, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Turkey, said the mosque had become a focal point for activism since Israeli commandos raided a Turkish ship headed to Gaza last year.

"It is very much the organisations that we saw rise to prominence following the Israeli attack on the Mavi Marmara that have taken on the streets today to lend their voices in solidarity with the Egyptians," she said.

A simultaneous rally of about 50 people was also held in Ankara, the Turkish capital, where up to 50 people gathered outside the Egyptian embassy.

65. Protests in Houston
http://www.39online.com/news/local/kiah-egyptprotest1-story,0,2480330.story

HOUSTON —
Thousands of miles away from the chaos in Egypt, protests were ramping up across the United States, including right here in Houston. Egyptians living in the Bayou City turned out for a demonstration Friday at the Consulate General of the Arab Republic of Egypt on Westheimer near The Galleria.

The crowd was full of passion and support. More than a hundred members of our Egyptian community showed up to make sure their homeland's protests are not in vain...

...In 2009, the world watched the same call for change in Iran thanks to the Internet. While the government stayed in power there, Houston protestors are optimistic for a different result in Egypt.

"It will change, it might not change today or tomorrow, but this is the start, this is the way revolution starts," Hamad said.

The Houston consulate says it has not heard from Egypt since the protests started. As for Houston protests, there will be another one in the same location this coming Sunday at 2:30pm.

What do you think of the remarks by the president?

Twelve of those shot were attempting to attack a police station in Biba while five others were trying to attack another in Nasser city. Dozens of others were injured in the exchanges.

"I urge you to use the words 'revolt' and 'uprising' and 'revolution' and not 'chaos' and not 'unrest, we are talking about a historic moment," she said.

88. Egyptian-Americans across U.S. join in protesting against Mubarak

(CNN) -- As protests against Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak continued Saturday in North Africa, Egyptian-Americans assembled across the United States to demonstrate their dissatisfaction for his regime.

In cities across the United States, crowds carried banners and flags and chanted slogans in solidarity with tens of thousands of those rallying at least 6,000 miles away in Cairo, Alexandria and other Egyptian cities.

Hundreds of protesters gathered outside the United Nations in New York on Saturday afternoon held up signs that read: "Mubarak Regime MUST GO," "Egypt's Struggle Is Our Struggle!" and "Egypt -- We Hear You!"

Meanwhile, they yelled out in unison, "Hey! Hey! Ho! Ho! Mubarak must go!"

Chaos engulfs Cairo as Mubarak points to successor
By HAMZA HENDAWI Associated Press © 2011 The Associated Press

A 43-year-old teacher, Rafaat Mubarak, said the appointment of the president's intelligence chief and longtime confidant, Omar Suleiman, as vice president did not satisfy the protesters.

"This is all nonsense. They will not fool us anymore. We want the head of the snake," he said in the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria. "If he is appointed by Mubarak, then he is just one more member of the gang. We are not speaking about a branch in a tree, we are talking about the roots."

145. Oh, there's lots of Bedouin.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bedouin

Jordan, I believe, is made up of a plurality of Bedouin tribes, or at least its political ruling class is mostly Bedouin.

One thing about tribes is they have a bad habit of considering other, similar tribes to be their most important rivals. So it's difficult (but definitely not impossible) for them to politically align, even against larger and clearly dangerous enemies. That's how we stole America.

132. Advice to Arabs from US professor (Angry Arab)
Saturday, January 29, 2011

Psychological Operations against the Arab people
Watch out. Be careful. There has been political psychological operations against the Arabs in publications close to the Mossad (like the Telegraph in the UK and that lousy site, Debka--or whatever it is called). They intend to imply that the US is orchestrating the protests in Egypt. Those rumors aim at 1) Imply that Arabs have no agency. That they can't act on their own and out of their own volition. 2) to exaggerate the ability of the US to control events in the Middle East. 3) to imply that the US never is hit in the face in the region. 4) to enhance the image of the US as one that is on the side of the people. 5) to discredit the protest movement in the eye of the Arabs to make it an American plot. Beware.

147. Are you in my mind or something? I was JUST reading this when you posted that
Revolution and the Army (Lenin, Trotsky, and Lukasc)

James sent me this: ""His grip on power was further challenged Saturday as the military that he had deployed to take back control of the streets showed few signs of suppressing the unrest, and in several cases the army took the side of the protesters in the capital and the northern port city of Alexandria. In the most striking instance, members of the army joined with a crowd of thousands of protesters in a pitched battle against Egyptian security police officers defending the Interior Ministry on Saturday afternoon."

Lenin: 'Not a single great revolution has ever taken place, or ever will take place, without the "disorganisation" of the army'

Trotsky: 'There is no doubt that the fate of every revolution at a certain point is decided by a break in the disposition of the army. Against a numerous, disciplined, well-armed and ably led military force, unarmed or almost unarmed masses of the people cannot possibly gain a victory'.

Lukács: "The instant this consciousness arises and goes beyond what is immediately given we find in a concentrated form the basic issue of the class struggle: the problem of force. For this is the point where the 'eternal laws' of capitalist economics fail and become dialectical and are thus compelled to yield up decisions regarding the fate of history to the conscious actions of men."
