Gunfire was heard as rival groups of stone-throwing demonstrators fought pitched battles in Tahrir Square


Gunfire has rung out in the early hours of Thursday around Tahrir Square in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, killing at least three protesters.

Sustained bursts of fire rattled on for about two hours while anti-government demonstrators tried to keep hold of the square.

The US has urged all Americans in Egypt to leave "immediately".

Egypt protests: Israel watches anxiously

Israelis are watching anxiously as anti-government protests continue in Egypt - one of the country's only friends in the Arab world.

"Judgement Day" for President Hosni Mubarak was the full-page headline jumping from the Hebrew-language newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth in Israel on Tuesday.

The implications of regime change in Egypt would be enormous here.

Yemen activists breaking new ground


Popular unrest is growing in Yemen, putting the spotlight on the activists who want to help shape the country's future, writes the BBC's Lina Sinjab.

Fearless and hungry for change, 31-year-old Tawakul Karman sits behind her desk in her house in Yemen's capital, Sanaa, watching the latest posts on Facebook.

"It all started here. The Tunisians, then the Egyptians, and now it is our turn," says the mother of two, who heads the campaign group Women Journalists Without Chains.

Like many Yemenis, she is fed up with what she considers to be a corrupt government.

Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh tells parliament he will step down in 2013

Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh has said he will not seek to extend his presidency when his current term expires in 2013.

Mr Saleh, who has been in power for three decades, also pledged that he would not pass on power to his son.

He spoke to parliament ahead of a rally in the capital on Thursday which, echoing protests in Tunisia and Egypt, has been dubbed a "day of rage".

Mr Saleh came to power as president of North Yemen in 1978.
