NEW HAVEN — —
A roofer from Berlin was sentenced to more than eight years in prison Thursday after repeatedly failing in arguments that he had a constitutional right to keep an arsenal of explosives, bomb components, grenades, machine guns and other weapons in his isolated — and booby-trapped — home.
Since his 2006 arrest, following what is believed to have been the largest weapons seizure ever in Connecticut, Alan Zaleski has been asserting that he was entitled to the weapons under his interpretation of the U.S Constitution's protections of religious expression and the right to bear arms.
In the search of Zaleski's residence, authorities also found dozens of books containing instructions on making bombs, converting weapons to automatic fire mode, and manufacturing silencers. There also was literature popular with groups advocating the overthrow of the federal government. snip
Among other things, Zaleski was convicted of illegal possession of more than a dozen, fully automatic machine guns and machine pistols, one with an illegally obliterated serial number. In addition, he was convicted of illegally possessing various silencers, hand grenades and an improvised explosive device
