Minneapolis woman who tried to mail puppy wants it back
Minneapolis woman who tried to mail puppy wants it back

The woman who tried to ship a puppy across the country through the U.S. Postal Service has filed an appeal to get the dog back.

On Jan. 25, Stacey Champion, 39, was charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty after she tried to mail the 4-month-old pup to Atlanta in a box with no air holes, water or food. The canine, named Guess, was discovered after the package moved and a postal worker heard breathing inside. Had the package been sent along in an airplane's unheated, non-pressurized cargo hold, the puppy would likely have died.

The black poodle and Schnauzer mix, which is being held by Minneapolis Animal Care & Control, was supposed to go up for adoption on Saturday, but now that process has been suspended. Minnesota statute allows an appeal hearing after an animal has been impounded due to a cruelty investigation. On Monday, an administrative hearing will determine whether or not Champion is a danger to the puppy. There is the possibility the dog could be returned to her custody. Even if she wins the puppy back during her appeal, a judge could restrict her ownership of animals.

If it is determined that the dog should not be returned prior to the court date for Champion's criminal charge, she would need to either appeal the case or post a bond that would cover the cost of Guess' care and kenneling at a price of $15 per day. If she doesn't post a bond, Animal Control would be able to place the dog for adoption. In the meantime, the puppy will stay at the shelter while the hearing is pending.

4. Someone better find out whether this brain-dead woman has kids.
And if she does, child protection services better check on them.

6. +1. there's something very un-right about that woman's thinking processes.
Whether it's organic or just ignorance is fortunately not up to me to determine.

8. Even little kids know to punch air holes in the lid for keeping lightning bugs and crickets.
I can't imagine a normal, functioning adult thinking you can MAIL a puppy. I assume she didn't know it would go by airplane, but how cruel to put an animal in a box and seal it up. As you say, something "un-right" about her thought process.

15. That is so totally inappropriate!
Now I'm going to start a thread about the rampant puppy-hating on DU!

I'm being facetious, of course.

Everything shipped is done so appropriately. What you've mentioned aren't really considered pets but are still shipped properly. That's obviously what this woman gapped on.

9. A Picture of the Little Trooper.... he's cute too they named him Guess
But as the story caught on, there was something missing. A name and a photo of the rescued pup. So here's "Guess," courtesy of Minneapolis Animal Control.

17. Looks exactly like my "Lucy" that died a few months back. She had endured
for over four years recovering from the Melamine poisoning. I miss her every day still. Wish I could have this pup.
The woman will most likely attempt to resell this darling if she gets her back. They should definitely not allow her to even visit this pupski.
Awwwwwww..... I miss Lucy. Wonder if I can still put my name in the hat.

13. Why was she mailing the dog?
Did she sell it to someone? That should be a negative factor in any decision made. As she was doing it to make as much money as possible regardless of the dog's welfare.

14. Birthday present to her niece.
Or something like that. Would not have gone well since the dog would not have survived the trip.

16. She is determined to make that pup suffer.
First, by the intensely cruel attempt to mail the pup from Minneapolis to Atlanta in the dead of winter via USPS postal service, likely causing it's death and and then the untold trauma that would be visited upon the intended recipient once the package was opened, and now by interfering in it's adoption so it must stay even longer at a shelter where it receives very limited contact by strangers. This person knows what she is doing.

I hope she does not have children.
