In an unusual development, a House Democrat on Thursday tried to quickly pass a Republican bill that seeks to eliminate unnecessary regulations, but the motion was blocked by the GOP majority.
The maneuver is part of the Democrats' strategy of criticizing Republicans on job creation.
Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.) failed in his procedural attempt to forgo 9.5 hours of debate Republicans have scheduled for Thursday and Friday on the legislation calling for the eradication of needless federal regulations.
Jackson sees the debate as grandstanding and indicated he believes there is enough support for the legislation without further discussion.
Jackson said, "I ask unanimous consent to take {the regulations bill} and ask for its immediate consideration in the House so we can move on creating jobs."
After a testy exchange with the Illnois Democrat, Rep. Mike Simpson (R-Idaho), who was presiding over the House, denied the request.
