Germany may be buying..
the NYC stock exchange..

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the New York Stock Exchange — the citadel of American capitalism for 219 years — was near an agreement to be acquired by Deutsche Börse AG in a deal that would create the world’s largest financial exchange.

If a deal is reached and regulators approve, the WSJ writes that the combined company would trade more stocks and futures than any rival in the world and more options than any U.S. exchange.

2. Isn't "börse" the word for "bad" ???
Or is it "böse" ?

They sound very similar, and my spelling in German is not too good.

3. i thought bose was the name of a stereo. or a forest, not sure. :>)
actually, böse translates as evil:

http://translate.google.com/translate_t?hl=&ie=UTF-8&text=bose&sl=de&tl=en#de|en|b%C3%B6se

and börse as exchange:

http://translate.google.com/translate_t?hl=&ie=UTF-8&text=bose&sl=de&tl=en#de|en|b%C3%B6rse

and i'm thinking of bois...and french...

but bose is a stereo system...

4. I think "borse" is the German form of the French word "bourse," meaning purse.
An exchange is also called a "bourse," apparently an extension of that meaning.

5. I think that's the root of
the word "disbursement." At least, it seems logical to me.

6. putative etymologies
Etymology

From Old French borse (French: bourse)

Most likely from a man Van der Burse, outside whose house in Bruges (Flemish port) traders met. Perhaps from the Latin bursa meaning bag.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiktionary:Bourse.

bourse
"stock exchange," 1570s, burse, from O.Fr. borse "money bag, purse" (12c.), from M.L. bursa "a bag" (see purse). Fr. spelling and modern sense of "exchange for merchants" is first recorded 1845, from the name of the Paris stock exchange. The term originated because in 13c. Bruges the sign of a purse (or perhaps three purses), hung on the front of the house where merchants met.

7. Maybe they can provide some real oversight. Meanwhile, why not buy China's?

9. Maybe they can think of new and creative ways to "deke the system"...
and make any oversight at all unlikely.
