4. I defend the budget.

The budget shifts money from some programs that have high failure rates to programs that will produce a better future for children. Try spending to your credit card limit, getting a higher spending limit and spending to that limit. I read a post from one DUER that criticized cuts to people that used federal assistance to pay for air conditioning, granted that person also mentioned spending for heating assistance. I grew up dirt poor, my parents never had air conditioning when I was growing up. If 40% of energy assistance is for air conditioning, I say cut all funding for air conditioning, except for seriously ill people who need air condition. Some of the savings can be directed to education assistance, the rest used to pay down debt and ultimately get lower interest rates that will make funding worthy, effective programs easier. President Obama put forth a workable budget that this poster thinks will make removing tax cuts for the wealthy easier in 2012, because the Obama budget will have the effect of cutting the legs from under republicans and forcing republicans to show their real faces. If Liberals want a fight, this is the battlefield on which I will fight them, even as I prefer not to. The Obama budget is sane, focuses on the near and far future and will make the nation stronger and more solvent.

5. The repugs have shown themselves for what they are for thirty years.
Shaming them means all of jack shit. If you are trying to say that Obama is above the fight then we will surely get our ass kicked again in the next election cycle.

You never win if you never try.

6. what about the MIC and "defense spending...?"
Edited on Mon Feb-14-11 09:14 PM by mike_c
Do you defend that, too? Is it really necessary for the United States to spend more for it's military budget than all the other countries on Earth?

I advocate restructuring the budget by cutting military spending by 75%. That would accomplish all the objectives you discussed while freeing up plenty of revenue for maintaining a social safety net for needy citizens and we'd STILL spend more for "defense" than any other country. Would you agree with that approach as an alternative to cutting taxes for the wealthy while leaving the poor, sick, and elderly in the cold and dark?

10. I would except
I pretty much closed the door when in his first budget increased defense spending.

It all seems to be smoke and mirrors now and beholden with a negative, even regressive attitude when the whole damn thing is viewed through the lens of real life for most of the world's people.

Obama has done a few things well, but the bus is still heading for the abyss.

In some particulars, no.

Now you can all accuse me of favoring his decisions to gore your favorite oxen or of holding some position I don't.

20. I'm with you as well.
When I look at the totality, there are thing I like, and some I don't. Anyone who has made an actual budget has felt done the same.

I'd like to see deeper cuts in Defense. And yet, I also know that such costs would cost jobs, just like most if the cuts that the GOP is demanding in other areas. So any cut that would cost jobs needs some serious thought. And maybe some staging overtime.

Same with certain tax increases. Like ending a mortgage interest tax deduction. Most people can't just pay off that mortgage, and they took the mortgage thinking that they would have and maintain that dedication. So any phase out needs to consider that and give people time to deal with it.

I think that Obama took a calculated risk here. He proposed some cuts that would anger the left. The GOP will now propose some INSANE cuts. And when people start to debate those ... I think many conclude that Obama went out of his way to cut, beyond what most Americans want, and the GOP wants WAY WAY more.

If my reading is correct, people will demand a position that is LEFT of what Obama proposed. And he'll be able to use that to fight off the insane right wing on most issues.

They aren't the ones that will freeze to death or watch their parents or grandparents die in heatwaves.

Jeez, poor people and their advocates are just so *selfish*. Why can't any of us think about what's important: Unquestioning support for a mediocre politician.

17. I have seen more than a few
defending vigorously this president's budget.

There are quite a number who will apparently defend anything concerning Obama, and think undying and unquestioning loyalty to Obama is what makes one a good Democrat. :patriot:
