LIHEAP: THE FACTS COMPILED
Edited on Tue Feb-15-11 03:27 AM by Bonobo
I spent the last few hours compiling statistics. I am sorry it
will be hard to read but I couldn't get it all to line up
right despite pressing the space key about a thousand times
and spending hours trying to make it look better. ;)

I am hoping some of you will be willing to look up these stats
and counter reference them against some of the claims of those
arguing that the LIHEAP cuts are not such a big deal because
the price of heating oil has dropped, etc.

One of the bottom lines is that the number of households that
used LIHEAP went from 5,279,150 in 2008 to 7,457,223 in 2010.
Furthermore, the avg. price of heating oil was $3.23/gallon in
07/08; $2.45 in 08/09; $2.65 in 09/10; and $3.12 in 10/11.

The two sources for my facts were:
http://www.liheap.org/fact_sheets.html
&
http://www.eia.gov/dnav/pet/pet_pri_wfr_a_EPD2F_prs_dpgal_w.htm

2. if you check plain text after you've lined up the data it will stay the way you
Edited on Tue Feb-15-11 03:24 AM by Hannah Bell
formatted it if you don't type too far to the right, e.g.:

1 5 10 9 10
2 7 11 9 10

so if you already had it formatted & then it ran together
when you posted, try checking plain text.

3. Thanks for this.
We have lots of opinions, and people are certainly entitled to them. But we always need facts, so thanks for putting in the work needed.

5. You're welcome.
7.5 million household required help with this program (and it's not easy to qualify for).

That's probably over 20 million people.

8. Great job, K&R.
Frankly, I find it disgusting that people HERE are actually defending this. I find it hard to believe that one can call themselves a progressive or liberal and still support trash like this. When will people wake up and realize that we're not being represented?

9. Thanks, after reading all the disinfo being thrown around here, I decided
to get my hands dirty and study the numbers and then publish them.

It was a big time investment, but I learned a lot and I hope they will be of use to some here.

10. Thank you for doing this, and also note
that these are households that are currently RECEIVING it. The number that need it and have not qualified is likely much, much higher in this economy.

11. That's a very, very good point!
The number of those must be staggering. This already represents over 25 million Americans! That's nearly 1 in 10 already! Jesus!

12. There is no place for that money to be made up. Overall prices will go up.
Power companies will not eat that much of a downturn in revenue. They will raise prices on the remainder to keep income levels up. So many are now privately owned.

Another deregulation noose around America's neck.

17. Thank you for laying it out so clearly...more people need it than before..
..and the Prez lied when he said that energy prices were going down. Oil and Nat Gas, maybe, heating oil, you know, the stuff that people use to heat their homes, is going up.

We'll have to see if the usual suspects show up to tell us that 'technically' the President's talking points are correct, whilst avoiding answering whether the people that may freeze to death due to the President's cut in their assistance are 'technically' dead or 'actually' dead...
