Koch brothers and CFL light bulbs? I noticed that recently the Tea Party
types have started ranting against CFL light bulbs. I'm curious, would a conversion from incandescents to CFLs hit the Koch brothers in the pocketbook?

2. They think the bulbs are another bit of proof of the power of the
Democratic nanny state. Yes, they are that paranoid.

7. Cashier at the hardware store started to spout that nonsense at me when I was buying
a bunch of CFLs that were on sale.

She said that the government was going to FORCE you to buy CFL bulbs. And started to talk about "big government".

I laughed at her and said that I was SURE there would still be some way for foolish people who like paying more for electricity to buy the old inefficient incandescent bulbs. But then I added I could not imagine anyone dumb enough to prefer bulbs that burnt out frequently and cost you more money in the long run. I told her that I had voluntarily switched because I HATE changing light bulbs and liked saving money. I smiled and added, that people could always go back to lighting their home with candles if they hate progress so much.

12. We went to CFL's in maybe 85% of our home back in the late 1990's...
cut our electric bill by around 30%...every month for well over ten years.
If they want to be so stupid, let them pay for it.

3. A bit off topic, but has anyone else noticed that CFL's are getting more expensive..
over time, instead of less expensive as they should?

I used to buy them for less than $2.00 each, now they are usually $3.50 - $4.50 each.

4. Yes, I have.
I bought numerous CFL's a couple of years ago so we could systematically replace the incandescents as they burned out. I recently had to buy more CFLs, and even shopping around, was surprised at the price.

10. Are you sure that those were not the dimmable bulbs?
I noticed some bulbs in packaging almost identical to the ones I bought that were more than twice the price. Upon closer inspection, I saw they were "dimmable."

14. Standard 100W equivalent. Last week at Target.
I scanned the shelves for a long time and found nothing that was reasonably cheap.

It has been at least a year since I last purchased CFL's, hence the sticker shock.

11. Not all CFLs are the same. There is a lot a variation in CRI, lumens, and price.

17. The key word is lumens - I've seen bulbs with a 20% range in
lumens all listed as equivalent to the same incandescent.

16. My Republican activist friend bounced this off of me too
He's involved in the GOP and is very hard right. Hates unions with a blazing red hot fervor. Anyway he tells me about incandescents being banned forcing us to buy CFL's that "are made in China". He stammered like a whore in church to my 2 questions:

1) "Where are incandescents made now? I'll bet China" He didn't know.

2) "Since when did you or any conservatives give a frog's fat ass about US jobs being shipped to China?" He went on a tirade about how it's the union's fault.

I asked him if he wanted to re-phrase his question, since he shot himself down. He said they throw shitty light. He's right. Touche. :sarcasm:
